There is a little bit of something for everyone here, love, money, revenge, blackmail, cads, spies, English gentlemen, flashbacks to war battlefields, Scotland Yard, old school ties, an English manor, horses, at least three deaths in the present and many more in the past, etc. All of this is quite fitting, as the main protagonist just happens to be a mystery novelist.
Still, while the book could probably have been shorter, it was still enjoyable. And, despite the red herrings tossed out by the author, early on I was still able to identify the doll's pillow as a plot device. :-)
