I'm taking some time today to update my lists at FictFact...I had next to nothing there because there wasn't much there when I first joined up as it was quite new then....so it is going to take me awhile! But I was wondering, is there any advantage to clicking "Follow" on a series that is never going to get any longer? (i.e., where the author has died or where the series was designed as a trilogy only.) I am adding completed series to my list, but I haven't used the site much yet so wasn't sure if 'following' would make any sense or not.

Yes? No? Maybe? LOL

Okay, another question. I'm trying to catalogue all series that I've started--even if I only read 2 books and then decided I didn't like it or want to continue for whatever reason. That way, I can just be sure I don't pick up a book in a series I tried five years ago and didn't like very much. So those I'm not actively reading or planning to pursue in the near future, I list but do NOT click "follow."

Yet when I go to the home page and it lists "Next for you" and "Your coming soon" it lists books from those series that I'm NOT following. So what is the difference between 'follow' and 'not follow?' When I click on the link that says "View all/organize" it tells me how I can remove series from the "next" list, but I don't understand why they'd be there in the first place if I didn't indicate that I was following them--which to me is an indication of interest.

I will be writing to the people who run the site eventually--got quite a list of series I'm reading or have read that aren't listed so want to get them added. but I don't want to point out 'problems' that might just be me being stoopit. LOL I really don't want to have to "tag" all my series with various things, but aside from that if anyone has suggestions I'll happily take them!

Cheryl, as far as "following" a series that is finished, I think it might be useful just to find out about new releases--they might send you info about a new series by the same author.  I don't know how detailed that feature is but I think I would follow any series like that if I liked it.

Good luck getting names added--others here have said they've had suggested authors added immediately, but I've sent 3-4 names and a few corrections about errors I've found starting about 3 weeks ago, and have not heard anything from them or had the authors added (or the errors corrected).  I don't know if they're especially busy now or if there's some reason my messages aren't getting through, but I've been waiting for the authors to be added because I want to keep track of them.

I finally just sent them a contact message on the website. I figured out how to eliminate certain series from the 'next for yout' part, but there is no option to remove series showing upcoming releases from that list as far as I can see. And of course about half of those showing on the main page are series I really don't care about new releases from...because I don't intend to read any further. If the site is designed only to keep track of series I like, it's not going to work too well for me. Maybe there is a way around it that they can tell me about, I hope.

Also, anyone here who is a FictFact member, if you don't mind, let me know your contact info so I can add you to my list. :)

I am, Cheryl.  My name is BookDiva46038 on there.  And I'd love the answer to  your question.  I don't "follow" Patricia Cornwell or James Patterson, for instance, and I have marked the buttons that eliminate the "next" book.  I think the last time I checked, though, that I still had their upcoming relases.

I had an almost immediate response to my author and additional series suggestions.  And they sent me an email so hopefully you'll get a response soon.  I rather like the site but of course, it doesn't have the "stand-alones."  Maybe later.     Anyway make me a contact or whatever it's called!

I'm on their too Cheryl please add me if you like, my name is yak233 on the site.  Like Sharon I get fairly quick responses to my author and series suggestions.

Sometimes they are a little a slow about answering my other questions but other than that I really like the site.

Happy reading

Tammy

Everyone who's mentioned this site says they get a quick response, and I've sent several messages and have never had any--it's very strange.  If I don't hear anything in a few more days I'm going to send another message asking what's up.  I don't even remember all the names I suggested they add--I can think of two--Sarah Stewart Taylor and Andrew Martin.

I'm DianeK there as well as here so you can add me too.

I'm at fictfact.com as well - gailreader.

Diane - I'm surprised they haven't gotten back to you. Every time I've written them either with a question or to add a series that isn't at the site someone has gotten back to me within 24 hours, sometimes sooner.

They are also on Facebook and I've posted to their page there with a quick response.

They have the new "skip" option if someone plans to not read the next book in a series; one of the guys there says they're working on an option "own" which will help me because I don't always remember if I have all the books in a series. I have a slew of series listed and it's cool to see the percentages rise as I read through the series, or see "completed". I probably have more series listed than I'll ever get to but I do tend to go overboard.

Edited to add: I like the fact that they're working on adding series written by multiple authors. They started with the Arcane books which I think is a cop-out at Krentz/Quick are the same author, but some the category romances which sometimes cross the various lines and have various authors I can really see the possibilities of keeping track.

Cheryl,

You can add me to the fictfact.com list - I'm LindaB.  I haven't tried suggesting any series yet, probably because by the time I had everything entered I found I had over 200 series.  Guess that's enough for now although I'm sure I will be adding in the future.

Thanks everyone for the input. I should add that I'm Spuddie there...I notice it's not like other sites where you ask permission to "friend" someone, I can just click on "follow" and then see your series and such. I added all of you up to this point--except Linda, as when I do a search on "LindaB" nothing comes up. Maybe you have your profile set to "private" or something?

No word back from the site as of this morning. Will keep you posted if I hear anything.

I am a fictfacter as well. (sunshaula)   I read about it on one of the forums here and LOVE it.  I also have sent in questions and suggested series and had almost immediate responses.  I have "followed"

several series that are no longer adding new books.   I like that I have a couple "current"  (i.e. read them all)  in my progress!  Makes me feel accomplished.  LOL

Yes, the fact that they didn't have this almost made me decide not to use the site, but then I figured out I could use "to be read" for books I already had in my possession.  That's one of the main uses I wanted to make of the site, to quickly see which books I still have to order.

Linda, I did find you, but Nicole, I'm having the same problem with yours, no results when I search for sunshaula.

I sent another feedback to them, as I noticed when browsing through my lists again, that ALL lists are set to "follow" even those I purposely didn't click the follow button on...and when I click "unfollow" it removes the list totally. What the heck? Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the intended use of the site...it's apparently not an archiving site at all, just a place to keep track of your CURRENT series. But that just seems stupid. Why even HAVE a "follow" button if any series you enter is automatically going to be put to "follow?" It sure would have been nice to know that before I spent hours entering everything on Saturday! LOL

I also noticed a major typo--and it's one of my big pet peeves--on the popup that happens when clicking on 'unfollow.' It says, "Are you sure you want to remove? This can not be undone. You will LOOSE book reads and all related information." (capitalization is mine, to show error.)

ROFL.

You will LOOSE book reads

Cheryl, that is so funny--that is my HUGE pet peeve too!  And I sometimes look at weight loss sites so I see it all the time--it drives me crazy!!

Last night I found a typo on the site too ("seperate"), but since I still haven't received any responses I didn't bother to send it in...maybe if they ever respond to me.  Or, maybe the reason they didn't respond is because I sent in some corrections and they didn't like that I was pointing out errors??? indecision

Loose, lose, choose, chose,  seperate for separate, desparate for desperate, who's, whose, your, you're, two, too, to, there, their, they're...I could go on.

One that just KILLS me is "would of/could of" for "would've/could've".  I see would of and could of is cozies ALL. THE. TIME. Drives me nuts.

Oh.  And definately. **shudder**

I'm done.

my bad - i was on private.  i changed my profile to public.

I read a lot of cozies and probably read right past the "would of" and "could of" all the time without it registering in my brain.  But now that it has been pointed out.....I am going to see it all the time!!  LOL  What is that called? Perceptual vigilance?

Hi Cheryl; I joined last FictFact last month (RobDee). I'm among those who have had a quick response to an author I requested. I use the site mostly to keep track of the Series Books I have and the ones I need to get.

I still haven't heard back from them as of this morning. Maybe they are quicker to answer if you're giving them good info but not so quick if you have questions about the site and how it works? I didn't send in the authors that were missing yet, still not sure if I am going to really use them much unless they have a way to list series without following them.

Also, I did end up finding a few of the authors that did not turn up when I searched--they were actually listed in the author index. No idea why they didn't show up when I used the search function.

Well, that's interesting, I'll have to try that.  That site is obviously a work in progress!

I've added all of the FictFact users in this thread to my "Following" list at FictFact.

All feel free to "Follow" me if you care too.

Maybe we can get enough PBSers to take over the site!wink

I'm Msright over there too.  I use the To Be Read one for books I own just like I use the TBR Pile here for books I own already.  Then I can look and see which ones I still need to acquire.

I could not figure out how to use the tags.  I tried applying some tags and maybe i was doing it wrong or didn't know how they're supposed to be used there.  But I couldn't make them work in a useful manner for me.

Every single time that I've submitted a question, author or series request they've responded really quickly.  A couple of times I submiited a request late at night and it was already added by the next morning.

I wish they had forums there.  I don't really see the point of adding friends there.  What does that do?

I confess that I haven't spend much time exploring beyond adding my series books.

OK I just went over there and can see that I can see the books of my contacts.  So I guess that's why you have friends over there.  I also played with the tags again.  Now I can see the use of them.  Sort of.  When I tried tagging there before they never showed up.  I couldn't figure out they're purpose if I couldn't see them anywhere.  But I just tagged a book and it showed up.  But it's not very prominant.  It's such a pale blue that it barely stands out.  I would prefer it to in like red or something that draws my eye to the tag.

I added you, Mary and Rob. Work was kind of slow this afternoon so I sent a couple of author suggestions. I just checked email again and they had already responded to those (less than four hours later) but still nothing about any of the submissions/questions I had sent yesterday or the day before. :-(
