This is the third book in the song trilogy. I love all of Miss Gellis medieval historical fiction. The characters are believable, you care about what happens to the main and the secondary characters. in fact you hate to put the books down and come back to the present. She does not sugar coat the times, conditions and the mind set of the people living in them. You are not brow beaten about the differences but you are made to feel what it is like to have lived in the times. These are keepers.
I generally like Roberta Gellis, but this was definitely not one of my favorites by her. Fenice and Aubery's relationship doesn't seem to develop as much as just kind of drift along, repeating the same fears and doubts until everything is resolved quickly at the end. As always with Gellis, period details and flavor are excellent.
