Why is all the mailers I have been printing carrying First Class instead of Media Mail?

What was the weight of the postage you bought? Sometimes the if the book is light it is cheaper to get the first class rate that is discounted with electronic postage. I think it is 7 ounces or less.

I mailed a book at the two pound rate a few days ago and that went media mail for me. I had to adjust the weight with packaging to get it to the correct weight.

What Rebecca said, the PBS system opts for the cheaper mail rate (if the data is correct).  Books under 7 oz will usually print out as First Class, while over 7 oz. should be Media Mail unless manually changed.

On a slightly different issue...since the rate change (and USPS software) I've had a few print as Media Mail and scan at the USPS counter as First Class.  Using the software upgrade, there doesn't seem to be an option for postal staff to change this so fortunately it only happens occassionally.

and when this happens it renders the edc null and void and then they want to charge 90 cents for  no

Only void if you want a different postal rate than is encoded in the Tracking barcode Adrienne.  I've you're willing to pay the First Class rate it still works just fine (my PO has done several for me).  They should only void/change the Tracking barcode if you want a different rate.
