By the time I got to this book I was completely hooked on the series. The main character of the book, Nick Seafort, is a strange person. The story has followed him as he grew and changed. He matures and calms some as the story progresses. That is a good thing because he is pretty much a psychotic jerk in the beginning. He makes lots of decisions that are poorly thought out and poorly executed but sheer luck makes it turn out okay for him. But then even a broken clock is right twice a day. The thing is this is the way the story is written. He recognizes that he has problems and tries to deal with them but it is always a struggle and never works completely. He is very hard on himself and needs to be but he is a very complex person. Evidently prozac is unknown in the 23rd century. THis is a good story. It is compared witht he Hornblower series but Hornblower was never as nuts as this guy nor as likely to snap and over-react. That's good. Who wants to read the same stuff set in a different location?
