This was a gripping tale that really held my attention. This is the third in the Inspector George Felse series, and, so far, it is my favorite.

This Inspector Felse novel was a bit more complex than the last one. The first few chapters leave you wondering if a crime was actually going to take place. But this was just a setup for the crime that couldn't seem, at first, to include anyone in the novel.

I finally figured out, toward the end of the book about a chapter or two before the list of suspects really narrowed down, who the murderer was. Of course, Peters then threw in a couple more red herrings that left me wondering if I had erred.

If you are looking for a happy ending with all the loose ends tied up, then you really shouldn't be reading any of the Inspector Felse books, as Peters' endings are like life, lots of possible endings left unraveled.

I can't wait until I get hold of #4 in this series.

Annet Beck's beauty is of the second order and it worries her parents so much that they guard her as closely as a prisoner...until the rainy Thursday in October when she disappears.
Annet is last seen vanishing over the crest of Hallomount, a hill in the remote Welsh Country believed to be the domain of witches. Five days later she mysteriously reappears, claiming that she was gone for only two hours.

Detective Inspector George Felse doesn't believe in witchcraft, but he does believe in love and he never underestimates its power, especially when it may have led to murder...

Brother Cadfael or Inspector Felse, if Ellis Peters' name is on it, read it! Too few writers of her calibre.
