Not your usually Tony Hillerman, i.e., this one is not set in the SW desert, does not feature Chee or Leaphorn. Instead, it is the story of a newspaper story, it's origin, its researching, its political ramifications, its consequences for the newspaperman author. There are some awkward jumps from reality to the story in the newsman's head, but once you become used to the unique style Hillerman uses for this one book, it flows. Good read.

This is a very different Hillerman book - at first, I didn't think I'd like it but I ended up getting really involved in the plot and the people. The protagonist is a likable guy. He is a reporter that stumbles on a story that he thinks is anything but! Stay with the book - you'll get hooked until the end.

Jhon Cotton is more then an ace reporter-he's a fly on the wall. He sees it all. hears it all, and stays out of sight. But when he sees his best friend's corpse sprawled on the marble floor of the Capital;s central rotunda, he knows the game has changed. The shocking pages of the dead reporter's secret notebook tell of a scandle involving a certain senatorial candidate, a milloin-dollar scam, and murder. and soon John Cotton hears the deadly footsteps of powerful people with something to hide. This a fascinationg... breathless suspense novel well worth the read.
