Humans are seeded on a planet believed to have no intelligent life, but the survey team missed the dominant species. The expected resupply ship never arrives and civilization devolves to a hunter, farmer, gatherer society. They learn to communicated to some degree with the dominant lizard species.
The final part of the story describes what happens when modern humans return to observe.
