The story unfolds as Frank reads from the journal and goes about his daily life. Already obsessed the war on terror and despondent about the lack of direction in his own life, things go from bad to worse as he suffers a series of setbacks at work and school.
Making sense of his father's scribbled account is a frustrating experience, which leads to countless questions, unanswerable by his absentee mother or deceased father. Why did he report for the draft? Why didn't he use his physical handicap – an inability to swim – to keep him out of the war? Why didn't he discuss the events he describes when he was alive? Why, above all, did he record his awful experience and leave it for his kids to sort out without guidance?
