I just got a book in the mail today from a book club wanting me to join.  It's a brand new book with an ISBN but on the front (as part of the cover art) it says "Enjoy this free gift."

I remember a discussion about this before but I couldn't find it and the help topics didn't mention it either.

I don't care so much about getting a credit for it but I just don't want it and it takes up space on my bookshelf.  I don't have a signature set up and really have no way of offering it to anyone unless it's posted into the system.  Or do I?

So, why is it that you can't post this book.. since it does seem to have an ISBN?

If it's a book with an ISBN and definitely not an ARC, then I don't see why you couldn't post it.

Sorry, my first post wasn't clear...I'm not sure if I can post it.  My instinct would be yes but I seem to remember there being some discussion about this before (maybe centered around a free gift book with purchase or something)

I searched under what is allowed/not allowed.

www.paperbackswap.com/help/help_item.php

Doesn't look like what you have would be under the "not allowed" category and, therefore, postable.

If you're not totally sure, maybe contact PBS directly.

I think I remember the same discussion and I believe in that case the book had something printed on it indicating it shouldn't be sold by itself. The wording not for resale on it is what made it not postable. Free Gift - postable, Not for Sale - not postable.

I never did understand tho, Melanie, why some think "Not for Sale" makes it unpostable. We don't sell books here, we trade them. If it said not for "sale or trade" then maybe I'd agree, but I never did agree with the the statement that a book that is "Not for Sale" or "Not for Resale" is not postable.

I think it was taken from this part of Help:

An ARC  (Advanced Reader Copy)  is an advance release of a book, usually sent to reviewers before the final copy of the book is published.

  • Advance Reader Copies are also known as Review Copies, or Uncorrected Proofs.
  • They are softcover books and often carry the same ISBN as the hardcover first-edition that is released later.
  • On the cover, they will be marked 'Advanced Reader Copy' or 'Uncorrected Proof' or 'Review Copy' and will usually also say 'Not for Sale'.

I kind of agree that books that are the full copy, final version should be postable. My reasons against it is that too many members will not be able to distinguish a Not for Sale ARC and a Not for Sale meant to keep a vendor from separating a free book from the other one. I wouldn't ever want to post a book with it on there myself because people receiving it may think it is an ARC and the credit fight would ensue.
