When I go to my Free Swap Registry it shows a 4 in the Free Swap Balance. Can someone explain what this means to a Standard member? Does it mean that if someday I become Ala Carte that for 4 swaps I wouldn't have to pay the $.49 per swap?  Thanks. Pat

The system doesn't really explain this clearly. The Free Swap Registry was added on 2/15/2015.

From the Help Doc, Credit Registry, Money Registry and Free Swaps Registry :
"Free Swap for Printable Postage = this means that you mailed a shipment with Printable Postage, earning a Free Swap (the Free Swap allows you to request a book in future without paying a Swap Fee)."

And, here is the text for the Help Doc  What is a 'Free Swap'? :

A "Free Swap" can be used along with Book Credit(s) to make a book request.

It replaces the 49-cent Swap Fee.

Enrollment in Standard Annual Membership grants Unlimited "Free Swaps" for the year - meaning, Standard Members use only Book credits to request books, and do not ever pay Swap Fees for Book Requests.

Limited Annual Membership comes with 30 "Free Swaps" per year- meaning, Limited Members can make 30 requests for books per year using only Book Credits (and no swap fees).

"Free Swaps" are added to your account when

  • You enroll in Limited Annual Membership (that adds 30 Free Swaps/year)

  • You enroll in Standard Annual Membership (that makes your Free Swaps unlimited for the year)

  • You mail a shipment with Printable Postage. Please note that the "courtesy printing" (monthly for Standard Membership, quarterly for Limited Membership) does NOT grant a Free Swap, since there is no Postage Printing Fee associated with that mailing.

Chris - thanks. Still clear as mud.( I had read all the stuff in the Help section). I still don't understand why I have 4 as a Free Swap Balance, when at least 3 of them came from the free 'courtesy printing'. Guess I won't worry about it. Pat

Yes Pat that is what it means. If you were ever to lower your membership you would be able use the Free Swaps you earned from using PBS Printed Postage.

Melanie - thanks, but because I'm a Standard member, I get one free ($.55) thing a month, and it's my understanding that those don't count, so why would they be listed?  Pat

Pat, that one free "thing" a month you're talking about, is you do not have to pay one 55 cent transaction fee a month when you use PBS Postage.  It has nothing to do with free swap fees.  They just add up for Standard Members as PBS Postage is used.  We do not need them, but some day The Team may come up with something to do with them....never know..

June - thanks. That's the best explanation so far. I couldn't figure out what I was going to do with them as I didn't need them.  Pat

We don't need them as Standard Members. But because we are rightfully earning them through the use of Printable Postage, there is a bank for them to accrue in just in case we should have a use for them in the future.

I haven't paid attention to whether we earn the Free Swap on the one free printed postage each month but would suspect it is easier to let the Free Swap accrue than to set up the system to exclude that one.

Melanie - it looks like they all accrue, but it does say in the rules that the 'free swap' we earn once a month doesn't count, as we don't pay the $.55 for it.  Thanks. Pat

As far as I know, we do not earn a Free Swap when we use the monthly free postage fee ($0.55).

Man, we really need easier names for all these things

I just looked at mine.

I used my April free printing (postage?) fee on 4/15/15. I do not have a +1 in my free swaps for that transaction. That transaction doesn't appear in my free swap registry at all, just in my money registry (even thought it's $0.00).

Thanks for the info Pat and Shannon, I just hadn't taken the time to look into it yet. It makes sense to not have them accrue on those transactions.

I'm pretty sure PBS went back to the start of the year and applied free swap credits to PBS postage used prior to the tiers. Folks were sending out books right and left in the week before the switch. I think it was over the confusion about if that swap credit came with the receipt day or the mailing day that all the postage uses counted for a credit.

I agree about the names. The "free swap" is a horrible name. Very confusing. What with the "free" credits with joining and the book credits?
