In conjunction with the Pre-printed DC Meltdown thread, I went to the PO today and the clerk did not know how to work my PBS labels.  I mailed out other, non-PBS packages that didn't have or need tracking. For some reason, I was given free tracking on all of those packages.  The clerk explained the computer would not let her continue unless this option was selected and it did not cost me anything extra.  Is this a single case of new employee-ism or is something new afoot with USPS?

only priority mail comes with free tracking.

all other classes of packages get a parcel ID # (which is the same barcode as the tracking #) BUT if you don't pay for the tracking, you don't get the tracking. The number will not show any tracking info on the website if you don't pay for the info.

The parcel ID # ties all sorts of info together, the size, weight of the package, the class of mail, the destination, so it can make it a little easier for management to see what is "in the pipeline"

Thanks for the info.  Upon further review, I noticed that my clerk didn't charge me tracking for the two PBS packages because she didn't give me tracking at all.

Priority Mail at retail comes with free tracking and $50 insurance.  If printed online, it comes with $100 free insurance.

Standard Post comes with free tracking (but not insurance).

That's what drives me nuts about this outfit.  I always tell people, "In the Postal Service, we have a rule for everything -- and every rule has 5 exceptions."

I take my books to my local p.o (where I work) and the clerk puts the free tracking number on every single book. I have never had a problem tracking my books.  I am currently having problems with getting them marking as received, but that is another issue.
