French Literature and its Background: 5. The Late Nineteenth Century
French Literature and its Background 5 The Late Nineteenth Century Author:ed., John Cruickshank "French Literature and its Background" is a series of six volumes, covering the period from the Renaissance to the present, in which a number of major literary figures are re-assessed and seen in relationship to certain aspects of intellectual history. — The thematic background chapters, the majority of which have been written by historians of id... more »eas, have made possible a marked concentration on literary values in the essays devoted to major writers.
This volume covers the period extending roughly from 1850 to the end of the nineteenth century, with a final chapter, "Literature and Ideology," which includes a number of writers active up to the outbreak of the First World Ward. Separate chapters are devoted to Flaubert, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Maupassant, and Zola, and three chapters offer a direct study of the intellectual background--positivism, realism, and nationalism in relation to the Catholic Revival. The chapters on symbolist poetry and the nineteenth-century theatre also deal, though less directly, with aspects of the history of such ideas. This volume, like all others in the series, contains a chronological table which enables the reader to relate major French literary works of the second half of the nineteenth century to historical events, to the works of leading painters and musicians, to works of critical theory, and to philosophical writings of the same period.« less
