Its been a rough winter for our family finacially and I was supposed to have gone on a mommy relaxing weekend trip, but ended up sick and now the kids are sick too. So many thing all at once stress a mom out, and I don't have much in the way of family to get advice from. So hopefully I can ask here.

We are all down with some sinus cold thing. The kids are going to the doctor ..I Mom already went. Been taking antibiotics, some sudafed and nasal spray, put have this annoying ear plugged up. Doctor just says fluid, but I can't hear. Anyone ever have this or know how long it takes to clear up? Any advice on making it better? Its so hard to be there for the kids when your sick yourself. I'm not resting myself, cuz I'm trying to listen at night for the kids and with one ear on the fritz its hard.

I also am trying to get this cold taken care of so I can get to the dentist to get some teeth work done, which I can't get done till the cold goes away. So double whammy. I had an appt all set and had to put it off due to getting this cold.

Any advice helps. I apperciate everyone's friendship here so far you've all been great. I'm just stressing, can't help the kids like I would like with myself being so down.

Hugs friends! Virtual ones anyway!!

Monica hope you and family are feeling better soon:) I personally like to drink hot tea with honey and lemon. I suffer with allergies/sinuses too and find that helps me if you drink enough.

I hope you all start to feel better soon. My ears have plugged before, bad. To the point you can hardly hear, like you described. My ear Dr. Told me pinch my nose & blow,as hard as you can. He said you wouldnt hurt anything. It's never worked for me, but maybe for you. I also use a Neti squirt bottle . This thing has made my allergies better and I haven't had a sinus or ear infection in 2 yrs, something I got annually. Take some good meds to help you rest at night too.

Please don't plug your nose and blow as hard as you can.  That's definitely a no-no.  I've had that annoying ear problem.  I hate that feeling.  One thing I learned when I had a late baby (after the other 2 were half-grown) was that anytime you have a cold you should really take decongestant to keep the fluid from building up in your ears and causing an ear infection.  I always tried to avoid taking something that wasn't going to cure me anyway.  Colds are much easier to handle when you've got some good decongestant to make you feel more normal.  I also highly recommend the zinc lozenges taken when you first feel a cold coming on to reduce the length and severity of the cold.  Hope you feel better soon!

I use a netti pot for when my sinuses get really bad. I dosen't give you instant gratification like nose spray does, though.

I like to sit under a hot, hot, hot shower when I have a cold.  As hot as I can stand and let the water rain right on my head.  That helps clear you up at least temporarily.

Zicam is wonderful stuff!  The throat spray and follow the directions exactly, it'll really help.

Other than that, rest and lots of fluids.

Take a really hot shower and get as much mucous out as you can, deep breathe and blow.  Or try a steaming pot using a towel over your head (take boiling pot off the stove and sit at a table, be careful).  Use a neti pot, but use the full size one.  The volume of warm saline water you pass through your sinuses will really make difference compared to the small amount in the other types.  Once finished you should be able to gently blow out quite a bit more mucous and saline.  Use aloe or the other gentle tissues so your nose does not get raw.  If it does, apply aveeno baby moisture cream to soothe your nostrils.  Keep yourself hydrated, this will allow the mucus to be much thinner.  Don't allow it to build up and whatever you do, never blow so hard you can feel it pushing into your eustachian tubes.  That will just force the infection into your ears.

I have allergies about 7 months out of the year where I currently live.

Recently I bought a humidifier and started leaving it on overnight.  When I'd normally be waking up with hard gunk in my sinuses, I can just get up and blow my nose.

A hot shower tends to help.  The steam loosens up my sinuses and I can get a lot of mucus out.  I sometimes turn my head to side and let the water from the shower head get into my ear (note, I'm not sure if this is a good idea) and it helps clear my ears.

What also has helped me is filling the sink up with hot, hot water.  I then put a towel over my head and the sink to make a pocket of steam to loosen things up.

Hot tea with lemon is normally a great help, too.  And make sure you keep up with the fluids.

I use 24 hour Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) as a decongestant. They often carry Sudafed that is not really pseudoephedrine. Make sure is says pseudoephedrine; Normal saline nose spray to help blow my nose, Afrin nasal spray in the AM and PM, and of course the famous full size netti pot to clear out my sinuses and decrease the bacterial count. If you need help using the netti pot, PM me. If you use it the wrong way you end up with sinus pain and water in your sinuses, but I highly recommend using it in the AM after a hot shower and before bed, so you can get a good night sleep. Drying out the nose and ears is really important to get rid of the liquid build up in your ears. Decongestants dry them out very nicely. A good month of this regime should do the trick. Fluid in the ear can be stubborn and hearing loss is pretty common. If the fluid in your ears are not resolved after one month, I would see your doctor or an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. They often prescribe presription decongestants like "Rynatan". A good follow up with the doctor to make sure your ears are clear is important. If you are left with fluid in your ears you are prone to ear infection. Fluid is a perfect medium to grow bacteria. The reason some people say blow your nose really hard is to pop your ears. I don't really see the purpose in it. It is merely a temporary fix and it does help spread the mucus from the sinus to the middle ear, where the ear drum is. An occational pop is not going to hurt you, but regular ones, I wouldn't recommend. It will in the end make you feel worse. The pressure is hard on your eardrum.

I know what it's like to have sinus problems. I've used this method on myself, my children and my grandson as well as some of my patients, with their doctors approval. I've found it to be very beneficial. Remember your doctor follow-up. Sometimes you feel all better, but the fluid persists. Be patient. This is not something that goes away really fast.

I hope you feel better soon, my prayers and good thought are with you,

Are you sure its mucus your ears are clogged with?  Sometimes when I get sick, I get extra wax in my ear.  If you think it may be wax,  buy some otc Debrox
