A vastly enjoyable novel, and also a rather intense experience of human endurance; it requires a period of time to recover, when one has finished reading it, and that is something that happens only with the greatest fiction.

This "modern classic" by an Australian writer tells the story of a farmer's daughter turned English lady turned castaway as an 1830s journey back to England from Australia becomes a struggle to survive in a harsh environment.

The underlying story is gripping and addresses issues of survival and self, but it takes a strong reader to get there, largely because White, for some reason, has chosen to write the narrative as it might have been written in those Victorian times.
