This was a story of a young woman's coming of age in the turbulent 50s and 60s. She grows up in New York and moves to the racially divided South for college. There she sees firsthand the first steps of the civil rights movement, the beginning of women's liberation and the sexual revolution. Angered by the inequalities she decides to study law, much to the chagrin of her mother who wants to see her married in the suburbs. I liked this book a lot because the main character, Tana, is an intelligent, independent young woman determined to make a difference in a challenging world.

The 1960s. Kennedy. Martin Luther King. Civil rights. Viet Nam. Tana Roberts comes of age in this turbulent decade, and begins a journey that will lead her from New York to the South during the heat of racial unrest. A thoroughly modern young woman, she yearns for a career and is willing to sacrifice everything to get it. And it's only much later that Tana discovers that she can have it all. Career. Love. And peace of mind. As she comes of age, at last, and comes full circle.

Tana Roberts comes of age during the turbulent times of the '60s. She begins a journey which will lead her from New York to the South during the height of racial tensions. A thoroughly modern young woman, Tana desires everything that life has to offer. Most of all, she wants a career and is willing to sacrifice anything to get it. It's not until much later in her life that Tana discovers she can have it all - love, career and peace of mind as life for her comes full circle.

I did enjoy this book but like many of Danielle Steel's books that I've read lately, I found that the story line was a little far-fetched at times. The highest of highs and the lowest of lows for the characters. I give this story a B+!

'A husband, security, a home, children-what's wrong with all that?'

At eighteen years old, beautiful Tana Roberts found it hard to say. All she knew was that for her, career came before marriage-even if that meant defying convention and going against the wishes of her fussing over-protective mother.

Throughout the turbulent Sixties, Tana followed her heart wherever it led her, searching for fulfillment in her work as a hightly successful lawyer, in friendships, and in fleeting affairs. Until one day, quite unexpectedly she discovered a gaping void in her life that only true love caould fill...

Typical Danielle Steel. An entertaining enough read, but just like all of her others--if you've read one, you've read them all!

The lead character is Tana Roberts, a very successful lawyer who puts her career before marriage and children. During the 60s she gets satisfaction from her career, friendships and affairs but eventually decides she is still missing something. The characters really come to life in this book and the ending is precious!
