You guys will appreciate this one.  I ordered Heart of the West by Penelope Williamson sometime last week, and I got the package today, but it had ripped open at some point in transit, and some doofus put this stretchy exerciser thingy like you order from TV in the package, and (just barely) re-taped it.  It had the standard PBS mailing label on it - you know, the one with "media mail" in big red letters, and the PBS packing slip print out thing was still inside.  Have no idea what dimwit brainstormed that little decision out...

Yeah, it was instead of the book.  I need to take that back to the PO.  Can't imagine some 98lb weakling looking to enlarge his pecs would know what to do with a romance novel:P  On the upside, it wasn't a WL book, so I can get another right away, and the guy at my local PO sez there's a chance they can find it for me and get this thing I received to Mr. Muscle.   Now if it'd been a Thighmaster or one of those Ab Lounger things, I might've been tempted...

This was packaged in a manila clasp envelope.  Unless the book wrap was damaged and the PO put it in there, which I really don't think was the case.  It had a small return address label at the top left, and the PBS wrapper was intact, just folded and taped down to the envelope.  I can see where plenty of people consider that sufficient packaging.  I personally won't use those envelopes, and for that exact reason.  They split open too easily at the edges.  You have to practically laminate them with tape to ensure that won't happen, and really, the plain old PBS wrapper takes a lot less tape to cover completely if you're reinforcing your wrapper anyway.  For 2-3 books, I use bubble mailers, which are much stronger, and I still tape the heck out of them, especially at edges and openings.  Even though I'm basically out a credit - unless this person chooses to return it (and I didn't ask her to) - it's one of the funnier PO snafu's I've seen in a while.  I was expecting a book, and pulled this thing out of the package, and for a couple of mins, I just sat there looking at it & trying to remember when the heck I ordered that:P

It's not usually your local  Post Office itself that mangles these packages, things like this happen in the big distribution plants. All your mail goes to a central sorting facility and the machines they use to sort the mail by city and route are notorious for chewing things up. Not to mention what happens to them on the truck, some of our packages that arrive at our P.O. look like they've been dropped in the mud and dragged behind the truck. Then of  course the customer assumes the carrier did it........i really hate that, because i try my hardest to make sure customers get their packages and i leave them in a safe dry area for them, because after all i am a customer too and that's how i would want my merchandise handled.

Yeah, I should say USPS, instead of PO.  The people at my branch & my carrier are wonderful.  My box is out near the street, and he's forever carrying my packages up to the door.  Really nice guy.  And my nephew is a carrier too..P
