I was talking on the phone to my sister today. Since I'm single, she always worries that I don't eat properly. So, every time we talk, she asks what I ate recently. I told her that I had a 7-bean soup a few days ago. You can buy the bag of beans in the supermarket. It's one of those just-add-water type of things. Not bad actually.

My sister said that she had seen those before but had never made them. She claimed that they were too hard to make. As I just mentioned, there's nothing to them. So, I asked what's so hard.

She said that the first instruction was to "Sort the beans" and that took way too long.

I almost split my side laughing.

Not really. She didn't believe me. Old fashioned family. Very old fashioned. With myself being the only exception, the only cooking my male relatives do is an occasional barbeque. Since men aren't supposed to cook (according to them), nothing I say is ever correct.

Sort of annoying, but it does mean that when I visit my sister that I don't have to cook.

OMG, that's classic!!!!!  That'd be a regular story at family gatherings for YEARS in my family.  :)

It'll sort of be like a regular story. Except with more pointing and laughing.

OK. I'll bite and admit my ignorance. What does the instructions "Sort the beans" mean?

I was wondering when someone was going to ask that.

Sorting beans simply means to look them over good and pull out the sticks, stems and pebbles that sometimes get put into the bags. It doesn't happen often as long as you get the better brands of beans (and bean products like 7-bean soup), but it does happen.

You only have to do it for dried beans, so most people have never sorted beans. My sister, for instance, only uses canned beans, so she's never sorted beans. I use mainly dried beans, so I do it all the time.

Thanks! As a professed non bean eater (I'm a veggie wimp), I didn't know that. I'm glad I was able to contribute to the enlightenment of the masses by asking a question that probably sounded very stupid to some. I'm happy to display my ignorance for the benefit of the public good. (LOL!) And I'll admit that even if I didn't know what it meant, I certainly knew what it DIDN'T mean. :-)

My favorite story comes from food columnist Ann Heller in Dayton, Ohio.  I read this in the Dayton paper back in the early 80s and it still makes me laugh.  Someone called her to say the zucchini bread recipe from the past week's paper was just terrible.  When putting the loaf pan in the oven, the zucchini rolled around, splashing the batter all over the place!  How can she stop the zucchini from doing that?  Somehow the cook didn't read the part about grating the zucchini first.

Adrianne, I can't believe anyone would even admit to that, LOL!
