When I look at other people's bookshelf, the genre of the book shows up in the info.  When I look at my shelf, it doesn't.  My question is...do I need to do something extra when posting to make it show up or does it show up to other people when they view my bookshelf?

I see the genres of the books in your bookshelf, Vicki.

I can see the genres on your shelf.

Not sure why the difference between the two though. Maybe they figure we already know the genre of our own books?

That's what I was going to say, Amee. The information in our own bookshelves has the 4 things that need to match when you post a book. Title, author, ISBN and Book Type plus the date posted. Like this:

At Last Comes Love (Huxtables, Bk 3)
Author: Mary Balogh
ISBN-13: 9780440244240 - ISBN-10: 0440244242

Book Type: Mass Market Paperback

I guess anything more would just clutter the bookshelf.

Genres are added to books via the Book Data Edit page for each book listing. You can edit a book listing to add them if you need to.

But I think everyone is right, and you are having a viewing issue.

Go to your bookshelf and then click on "View my public bookshelf" and you can see your shelf the way other people see it.
