I requested a book, it was accepted into the system and I waited for the persons acceptance to send, never happened as apparently that person was on vacation.  I get a new date requesting the book from another memeber, apparently the system does this automatically?  Again nothing so on to the third person.  After 2 days I pm'd the third person asking them that this was the 3rd request and to please let me know if they could mail the book.  The reply, "sorry I don't have this book".  How can that be?  How can the system request a book from someone that does not have it listed?  I canceled the order and went in to look for the book, I found the book I just cancelled (the book the person does not have) and an audio version.  Guess I will just go to Walmart and buy the book.

not sure what list you are speaking of.  I just searched PBS for the book and that is what I came up with, the book I had just cancelled and an audio version.

Sorry you're having trouble getting the book. The best thing to do in these cases is to submit the request and then ignore it. Don't worry about how many people it goes through. The system will keep looking for the book and it will notify you when the book has been mailed, or when it has determined that nobody can mail the book to you.

The member who says he doesn't have the book did post it to his shelf. He could have seen the date when he posted it right on the request. He's probably given the book away since then, or he's just forgotten that he has it. When you canceled, the book was put back on his shelf, and he's the first in line to send it, so in order to request it again, you'll need to request it from him and let him cancel. This is why it's not a good idea for the requestor to cancel. If the sender doesn't have the book, let him cancel.

One other thing you can try is going to the Box-O-Books page under the Community menu. Search for your book there, and you'll see the list of BoB members who have it. You can then pick one who has a nickname setup and search the member directory for him or her, then order directly from that person's shelf.

The reply, "sorry I don't have this book".  How can that be?  How can the system request a book from someone that does not have it listed?  I canceled the order and went in to look for the book, I found the book I just cancelled (the book the person does not have) and an audio version

Just an FYI, when that person sent you the message, it should have been in the cancel process, so the request you cancelled was with a new sender. If you re-request the book now it should not be with the person who said they don't have the book. It is frustrating, but some books have posted for quite some time and the members have either lost interest in PBS or have lost the book or sometimes PBS just has glitches.

If you need to book right away, then you might need to buy it elsewhere, but if you are not in a hurry, you can just re-request the book and the system will get through those inactive people to someone who can sent the book without you having to do anything after placing the request.

When you sent the PM to the person after 2 days of waiting who said they "didn't have the book" did you then cancel the request instead of letting them do it? If you cancelled the request, PBS did not delete the book from their shelf...the other person would have to delete the book manually unless THEY cancelled the order, and maybe they didn't realize that. So if you did another search after you cancelled, the book WOULD still be on their shelf.

If you had waited to either let them cancel or let the request time out again, then the book is automatically removed from that person's shelf and won't show up in the system. If the book is still showing up on their bookshelf, you may want to send them another PM to let them know that they should delete the book from their bookshelf if they do not have it.
