Has anyone read these mysteries? They involve Irish governess Nell Sweeney in 1868 Boston. I"ve got them on my WL.  I absolutely adore Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries, set in 1890's New York City, so I'm hoping I will like this series as well.

Also, has anyone read Mary Kruger's Gilded Age Mysteries? She only has 3 books, they are set in 1880's Newport, Rhode Island, and I've read her first one. That was was set on Bellevue Avenue, where the "summer homes" of the Vanderbilts, Astors's, etc were.  I grew up close to Newport and have been through 5 or 6 of the Mansion Tours and these homes are magnificent!  They were fodder for a lot of imagination growing up!

The coolest thing about this author for me, is that she is a librarian in my hometown of New Bedford, MA!  And she is the aunt of the Kruger brothers (remember Mark who cried ALL the time! ?)   who were on Biggest Loser last season :)

Oh, yay! I've read the reviews and they look great, but I was hoping someone on this forum could give me a good word :) Thanks, Lori.

FYI - Books 1 through 5 in this series are currently out of print - even though the series didn't even start publishing until 2003.  (Oooh - it irks me when publishers do that!)

Secondhand prices for book one (Still Life with Murder) start at $21.00 on Amazon.    And there is quite the wishlist for it here at PBS.  The others are less expensive and have shorter or no wishlists.

I read a couple of chapters of the first P.B. Ryan book but it didn't really capture my attention and I passed it on to someone else here quite awhile ago. I can't say I really DNF'd it--I unloaded it during one of my "weed-out weekends" when I grab a dozen books from the TBR that have been sitting here for a long time--always a first in series book--and read 2-3 chapters to decide if I'm still interested or not. If the book hasn't grabbed me, I re-list it here at PBS and if it does, it goes back on the TBR...or sometimes it's interesting enough that I keep right on reading and come up for air in the middle of the book! LOL Anyway, it doesn't really mean I thought it was a 'bad' book, just that it didn't pique my interest enough at that time to keep me reading.

Do let us know what you think of it if you do go ahead and read it, Kim! I also really like Victoria Thompson's series so will be interested to see how you compare them.
