So began in Hydesville, New York, in 1847, the strange true story of the Fox sisters, two young girls who started Spiritualism in America. At first it was fun to rap with ghosts. But it turned into terror when angry unbelievers threatened the girls' lives. Mobs tried to invade their home. Again and again they were forced to undergo cruel and insulting tests in oder to prove that they could talk with spirits.
Some very famous people tested the Fox sisters, among them editor Horace Greeley, novelist James Fenimore Cooper, and poet William Cullen Bryant. No investigator was ever able to prove that the girls were frauds.« less
