** spoiler alert ** Well now. I had a really hard time getting into this book (same happened for Dune Messiah for me). It was probably my least favourite so far. It was interesting though.
This book made me not like Leto as much as I had in the previous book. The worm form really did make him all of his ancestors and not enough of that really innocent yet brave little Leto we learned about in the last book. I think in time knowledge got to him and he just longed for death because he missed all that he lost. It made me truly appreciate Paul so much more in this way. Moneo is the best character in this book; an Atreides (one of Ghanima's descendants) who was so similar (yet more unique and different) to Stilgar to me. Siona was a bit of a nuisance and reminded me of very earl day Paul. Although my favourite part of this entire book was her test. I don't truly understand what Leto said about her in the last part of the book and how she was like him but without worm form, because they didn't seem as connected in that way. I think Hwri Noree was not very gentle as they state she is throughout the book. Yes she is sweet, but once she was with Duncan Idaho it was as if she was Alia (minus all those ghosts and such she had to deal with). Speaking of Duncan Idaho, of course he is the main character throughout all of the books, and is the most intriguing to figure out. He was probably the smartest character of all in this book, yet they constantly called him a fool. Nayla was the most dedicated to following command and I admired her. I felt so badly for all the fake Fremen who thought they were Fremen while far from it. It made me think about how things change over time in places and how there are some advancements that just strip a person completely of who they claim to be.
I didn't like how the breeding program was making slaves of everyone. It was very scary to read about such things. This is what caused me to have such a problem with Leto II. He was so controlling. Riding around on his suspensors made him just like his Great-Grandfather the Baron! At the same time while reading about Leto you can't help but pity him so much. You love him and pity him and hate him throughout this book. At least I did.
