"Throughtout the highlands of Midwestern Guatemala a massive conversion to Protestantism is occuring among the native Indian population. In this study of the village of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Sheldon Annis explores why Protestantism has taken root. He shows how the economic, environmental and socisal shifts of the twentieth century have acted to undercut 'The colonial creation of Indianness' and in doing so have laid the basis for new cultural indentities." Sheldon Annis is a fellow at the Overseas Development Council in Washington D.C.
