This is an WWII memoir by Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and Chocolate Factory and Tales of the Unexpected. Written for young adults, the writing is brilliantly clear. It starts as an expatriate memoir, recounting his experience as a Shell rep in what is now Tanzania in the mid-1930s. When the war started in 1939, he was assigned to round up hundreds of German nationals in Dar-es-Salaam. The bulk of the book coves his experience as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. His story of how seven RAF planes fought the Germans over Athens before the withdrawal from Greece is incredible. Dahl said later that his near death and recuperation in the hospital made him more introspective and creative. He started the war as a business man but ended it a writer.
