I thought when I posted a wishlist book, as a gold key member I would be given the choice to post it to a friend or FIFO.  So, I recently posted a book that I thought would probably be on at least one of my friend's wishlists, but the book was offered to the first person in the WL line.  Then, out of curiousity, I went and checked my friends' wishlists individually just to see if any of them had that particular book on their wishlist.  Sure enough, at lease one friend does--same edition (ISBN # matches, etc).

Shouldn't I have had the choice to send the WL book to my friend first?  (They are a gold key member as well, if that matters.)  Was it how I posted the book?  It was on hold on my bookshelf, and I posted it from there.  Was it a glitch in the system?

I'm just going to send it to the original requestor--just curious as to why I wouldn't have been offered the choice to post to my friend's bookshelf.

I had that happen to me the other day too!

I posted a book that I knew was on a friend's WL, but when it posted, it went straight to the first person in the FIFO line.  I thought it was just because the first person in line had it on auto-request and/or that it was because the friend wasn't a Gold key member.

I like having the option to send to a friend first in case they have other WL books I can send at the same time to save on shipping & also give the option to friends to get more books at the same time.

If your friend was on Vacation hold, they would not have shown up in the drop down menu and your book would go FIFO.

Ahh, thanks, Mary!! I just now took a second look at my friend's page & yes, it was on hold. I didn't notice that the other day.

In my case, my friend's account wasn't on vacation hold, so that doesn't explain it.  But--the first person in the FIFO line did have the book on Auto Request...maybe that has something to do with it.  I don't know.

Before you click that final button to post your book, there will be a drop-down box with the name(s) of your friends that are wishing for it. Is it possible you didn't see it? It's easy to miss.

I don't post books from my bookshelf.  In fact, I uncheck the box when I get books so that they don't go into a TBR pile.  If I have to physically enter the ISBN, then that's just another check to make sure that the book I'm posting is indeed correct in every way.

Another reason the book didn't go to your friend could be because the friend may have had that book on wish list hold on her shelf, in which case it wouldn't show and it would skip her.

Shiela--I'm pretty sure if you have wish list books on individual hold, they won't show up when someone else looks at your wishlist.  Since this book showed up on when I looked at my friend's WL, I'm pretty sure she didn't have the book on individual or vacation hold.

Just another PBS mystery! smiley

Laura, I'd suggest submitting this as feedback.  They team may or may not be aware that posting from the bookshelf doesn't pull up the friends option -- or maybe they'll see something else, like your friend had her bookshelf on hold for five minutes.

I've posted several WL books in the past week and almost all of them came up with On Your Friend's WL list.

I think if the whole account is on vacation then you can still see their WL but Post This Book button won't be there.  WL books on indiviual hold don't show up though. I could be wrong but that's how I understood it to work.

ETA: I just clicked on the public view of my Wish List and it shows most of my WL books but not the ones on individual hold and the Post This Button isn't there.  My account is on vacation hold.

After reading Mary's post, I thought maybe my friend had their account on vacation hold, so I checked--the account isn't on hold now, but maybe it was earlier today when I posted the WL book.  As Patty suggests, I'll submit feedback to let the site administrators look into it.

I post a lot of WL books and have only had a friend come up once to be the recipient so I have also wondered if that function always works. but I know some of my friends frequently put their WL or acct on hold so thanks for the explanation!

Just got an answer back from the PBS team--

"Thanks for writing in.  We finally got a chance to test this and you are correct - unHolding a book on the Bookshelf does not offer it to your Friends who are wishing.  We would like it to work that way, so we've put this on our list of changes to make to Gold Key in the future. Until we get the chance to make this change (which may take a while), to activate this aspect of Gold Key while posting Wish List books, you need to post them "from scratch" (not unHolding on the Bookshelf)."

Glad to get this information, and now i know to post my wishlist books by entering the ISBN #s to see if one of my friends is wishing for the book.

Thank you for the update, Laura!!  I have a number of WL books on hold until I read them. I will have to remember this from now on!
