Reese Jordan was once left at the altar by a pedigreed lady he loved and hes assured himself he will not be hurt again. Hes wealthy and an astute business man; now he wants an heir without emotional complications.

Faith Collins lives in a derelict Richmond, Virginia, home that she may lose to taxes. She lives with her 5 year-old sister, two aunts and two widowed lady relatives (by marriage). The ladies take in sewing but are unable to earn enough to pay the taxes that are due soon.

It is 1869 and life in the South is still grim. There arent enough men available to help the widows and unwed ladies keep their homes (because of the onerous cost of repairs and taxes).

Reese advertises for a woman to provide him with an heir without marriage. It says much about the times when more than 200 women appear for the interviews. Although Faith has read the Richmond newspaper with a misprint (implying that the job is for a lady to be a quasi-governess to a child); the women with the Washington, DC, paper know what Reese wants: A lady to live with him in Wyoming Territory for one year to provide him with an heir and then leave (without the child).

The striking thing about this scenario is that both Reese and Faith are very clear what is expected and still enter into the contract. Each party has specific reasons for participating in this unique contract.

I did have a hard time understanding how each party had such a difficult time understanding that the other person had changed over the course of the pregnancy, especially since they were so in-tune with each other on other points. 3.5 stars
