If they were to remake the movie Gone With The Wind today (heaven forbid!) which of today's crop of actors and actresses would you cast in these rolls: Scarlett, Rhett, Melanie and Ashley?

I know it's a ridiculous question, but I'm hoping it will be a fun one, too.  And I am stumped.  For instance, I just can't envision anyone but Clark Gable as Rhett.  As I read the book, he was Rhett.  Period.  I cannot think of any other actor who could even possibly fill those shoes.  And I similarly have no ideas as far as Scarlett or Melanie or Ashley go...

So, let's have some fun!  Who in the world would you cast?

I'm no good at this but George Clooney perhaps?  Is that a bad idea?  I don't know what kind of actor he is.  I just think he is very good looking.  As far as the women I have no idea.

The only person I can think of who is debonair enough to play Rhett is Pierce Brosnan. I will have to give more though to the other characters.

As long as we're casting, we also need Miss Pittypat, and Mammy.

I would have to think about this.  But I just had to pop in to say, it is absolutely not a ridiculous question!  It could be fun.

No no no no no no no... if it's not broke, don't mess with classic films!  I'm still bitter about the Psycho remake and now their apparently talking about doing a remake of Rosemary's Baby, so I get nervous even talking about hypothetical remakes.

Although I did convince my sister that they were doing a remake of GWTW with Hilary Duff as a joke.  She freaked out for about 30 seconds.

But maybe Reese Witherspoon as Scarlett?  I can't think of anyone else I'd cast in the other parts and it seems like sacrelige to even suggest that.

Chris Rock as Rhett and Queen Latifah as Scarlett.

Fantasia from American Idol could be PittyPat.

I agree w/ Pierce as Rhett....how about Oprah or Queen Latifah as Mammy?  For me, Scarlett could not be a blonde---that role needs a brunette steel magnolia type

I'd love to see Daniel Craig (the newest James Bond) as Rhett.  He's gorgeous, but with enough devil in his eyes to pull off Rhett.

Remember Morgan Brittany back in the 80's? I always thought she'd be a perfect Scarlett.

As for today's actors, not a lot of them come to mind.

I could see George Clooney as Rhett. He has that aloof smugness. Joaquin Phoenix might be more age-appropriate, though. I can't remember how old Rhett was in the book.

Amy Adams could pull off Scarlett pretty well, I think.

Melanie--Jennifer Garner or Katie Holmes? Somebody sweet in manner.

Ashley--the only person I can think of is Matt Damon, who can do that quiet sort of character.

I'm not sure Fantasia would be right for Aunt Pittypat.  I mean, er, wasn't Pittypat Scarlett's actual aunt?

And, while I still can't come up with any suggestions on my own, I have thoughts about on some of your posted suggestions.  First, I just can't agree with Pierce Brosnan for Rhett.  Rhett needs to be tall and broad shouldered, and Pierce Brosnan is just too frail and spindly in my opinion.  And George Clooney just isn't right either in my mind.  I can't even say why, exactly, since Clooney is smug and all.  But he's just not quite right.

And Matt Damon is just not wimpy and milk-toasty enough to be Ashley.

But hmm....Amy Adams as Scarlett and Jennifer Garner as Melanie, are actually both interesting ideas.....

Yeah, I know, I had doubts even as I typed in his name! LOL. Problem is, Hollywood doesn't exactly specialize in Ashley Wilkes-milktoast types of men nowadays!

How about Hugh Grant? He's probably too old, too, though. He played a real milktoast character in Sense and Sensibility!

Oh! Orlando Bloom! I bet he could do a good Ashley! Not that he's necessarily wimpy, but he's got that gentleness about him. And it would be understandable why Scarlett would make a fool of herself over him, that's for sure!

Wow. This is really tough.  I do have to say that Clooney was my first thought also, but seems too obvious.

Wonder if they'd have to do it with total unknowns?

I can't wait to read more ideas.

What a great question!

I am such a GWTW lover!

When I first read Reese Witherspoon, I thought no way.  But really, if she were to die her hair or wear a wig, I think she would make a great Scarlett!

I think Queen Latifah would be good as Mammy.  Maybe Nicole Kidman as Melanie?  Viggo Mortenson as Rhett?  Heath Ledger would have been good Ashley.

Actually, other than age, I think Nicole Kidman would make an excellent Scarlett. When I'm thinking of people with which to cast this movie, I'm having trouble getting past my preconceived notions that Rhett should have dark hair and Ashley should be blonde etc. etc. GWTW is just such a classic that it's hard to think outside the box when it comes to casting, but I love this discussion. I also love Viggo Mortensen. I would like him in "Dumb and Dumber." lol

I re-watched the old Carol Burnett GWTW (forget the actual title they gave it) a few weeks ago on youtube and now I can only picture Dinah Shore as Melanie.  I'm cracking up just remembering it!

found the links:  Part 1 and Part 2

My vote lies with George Clooney for Rhett, I'll have to give the others some thought...

Vanessa V. I didn't know there was re-make of Psycho, now I'm upset!!! Anthony Perkins is THE Norman Bates and nobody else should play him!

I like the idea of George Clooney, and (say we're expanding to non-American actors), Jude Law comes to mind as someone who could pull of Rhett. And what about James McAvoy as Ashley? That guy can do ANYTHING.

Natalie Portman might make a good Scarlet. She played a similar character (feisty, passionate, somewhat manipulative towards men) in The Other Boleyn Girl, and I thought it was one of her best performances. As for Melanie, it needs to be someone who's small and kind of frail and gentle seeming...hm...

Oooh, I love Natalie Portman! Did you see her in V for Vendetta?

Hm. How about that girl who played Johanna in the new Sweeney Todd? Only one I can think of :)

How about either Ashton Kutcher or James Spader from Boston Legal for Ashley?   Ashton Kutcher looks slender and un-muscular (?) to me.  And James Spader looks completely soft and mealy (if that's a word!).
