One that would require Menage or more?  Or would that be to risque?  I was thinking of calling it The More the Merrier Erotica Swap.   Or would that push the boundaries of what PBS would allow.  Just pondering while I wait for all the books to be received on my current game.

Other title Ideas are: Two Guys and a Girl, Torn Between 2 (or more) Lovers or It's a Group Thing.

I don't see why not- there's already the Unconventional Erotica Swap, or something like that, so what you are suggesting is in that same vein.  If that one is ok, yours should be too.

I like your first title suggestion best, btw.

I like your first suggestion too and I love the idea for the swap!  The Unconvetional Erotica swaps I've seen are all buddy ones where you're buying someone else books from their WL.  I've not seen just an elephant-type swap just for that type of erotica.

Could someone give a KISS (keep it simple stupid) explanation as to how games work? They seem so complicated to me LOL. What's all the stuff about revealing, stealing, etc about? I understand about giving the credit to the swap moderator. I don't know how the rest of it works.

Mary, sounds like a fun elephant swap to me.

Anne, i suppose it helps if you've ever played this kind of game in person.  it's something we used to do in various church groups around Christmas, so as soon as i figured out it was the same thing, it made sense.

so i'll try to explain how the in-person game works, then translate to how we play it here.  :)

White Elephant Swap (or present) basics:  Everyone brings a wrapped present with them, and they all get put on a table.  Draw numbers (or whatever) to decide what order people play in.  The first person (A) picks a present off the table and unwraps it.  The second person (B) can decide if they want to take what A has, or pick another wrapped present off the table.  If someone's present gets taken, then they replace it either by taking another players present, or a wrapped present.  (In most cases the rules prevent you from taking back what someone just stole from you.)  And it goes on, with each successive player deciding if they want to take what someone else has, or take a wrapped present.  The game is over when all the presents are unwrapped.  There are usually rules on how many times a certain item can be stolen before it's out of the game.

Translating that to PBS Games: Instead of wrapped presents, there's books.  Stealing works the same way.  Instead of choosing a present off the table and unwrapping it, you select someone to reveal (tell you which book they're offering).  And of course you aren't doing it in person, so a PM is required to whoever needs to come play or reveal to keep the game moving.

that's a basic elephant swap, though the rules for each game can vary the number of steals and possibly add twists.  there's a variation called a limbo swap where you can see what all the books are up front.  there's also 'buddy swaps' where you're assigned a buddy, and you're getting them something (sometimes books from their WL or RL, sometimes other things like coffees, teas, or in one game right now pajamas).  the travelling boxes and virtual boxes are totally different.

Excellent explanation Ellen!

It took me some time to figure out how the games work too.  If you do join one, let the hostess know that it's your first game and tell the other players that in the game thread.  I promise, they'll be super nice and help you out.  I'd start out with a regular elephant swap first to get a feel for how they work.  You'll get a PM whenever it's your turn.  If someone wants you to reveal your book, they'll PM you.  When it's your turn, someone will PM you.  When it's your turn, you just send a PM to someone and ask them to reveal or you send a PM to the person you've decided to steal from.  If you're ever not sure what to do, just ask.

I've only done a few games..I've seen the unconventional one...the only ones I've done are the elephant swaps and the past few months the tea swap. I just don't see the purpose in the wishlist swaps...if you're gonna pay for a wl book why not just order your own? dunno..guess I'm just not getting it.

darn..I could've done this one if you posted it but I just put a couple unconventional erotic romance books on the wishlist thread so they're going bye bye...

I don't do the buddy swaps for that reason Susanna.  Why buy someone else WL books when you could just buy your own?  I've done WL elephant swaps before and those I like because you're getting a different WL book in exchange for your WL book.

I'm in my first Buddy swap like that now and I think it'll be my last.  I was lucky enough to get the buddy I asked for that I already own a book on her WL.  I received it in a game and it's not my thing.  But it's just not as fun as doing the reveal and stealing.

sounds interesting. from what I have picked up, you sometimes get stuck with books you don't want, right?

Yes, in the buddy swaps you send them books from their WL and you get books that are on yours. You will like what you got since they were on your WL but unless you have books that are on your buddy's list you will have to go shopping. I did one and it was fun but I realized that it is a whole lot easier to just buy books for myself.

And I like the surprise and the stealing and choosing what to do next

yes, in the elephant swaps that can sometimes happen.  which is why mostly i stick to stealing instead of asking for a reveal, as long as i see something i like.  i also tend to play mainly in WL swaps as well, so even if i get something i'm unlikely to read i can turn it around into a credit quickly or just use it in a different swap.

though it's not cool to ask for it, sometimes if someone reveals for you and you're holding the book for the whole game without it ever moving, they'll offer you a credit instead of a book.  i've taken that offer once or twice, and i've offered it several times.  i try to pick books i think will be popular, but sometimes i guess wrong.

Mary, I'll be looking for that swap!  I like your title "The More the Merrier" the best:)  You definitely will have no problems filling up that game!

Susanna - the fun thing about doing the W/L swaps like Cyn's Unconventional Swap are that you are guaranteed books that you want off your list as well as opportunity to "proof" your buddies books for them - more bang for your buck!  LOL plus you aren't shopping for yourself, you're buying for a buddy so you can justify it (oh, the lies we tell ourselves!)

Sometimes in elephant swaps you may get "stuck" with books that you don't want but I just figure I can use it in another game or post it if I want to.  I'm with Ellen though...I usually will steal a-way in games:-)

Yes, you always risk getting a book you're not interested in.  I have a few times but other times I've gotten something really fantastic.  That's why I always offer to whomever ends up with my book the opportunity to swap it out with anything on my shelf.  I'm bound to have something they'll enjoy.

Yeah it happens.  I may go ahead and read the book. But I'm not big on the paranormals so I usually skip those swaps and this is a paranormal anthology.  I got it in an erotica swap awhile back. I usually just steal a book instead of asking for a reveal. But sometimes if you're up early in the game with nothing much to steal yet and no one steals from you-you might get a book you'd rather not get.  I just repost the book, give a shot at reading it anyway or offer it up in another game.  Most of the time I get a book I'm interested in reading.  My turn is coming up in a game and I'm actually thinking about stealing a book I've already read.  It was a good book and I had already decided to get it again if I saw it on a boxer's shelf (when I go back to boxing) or if I saw it in a deal with other books I want.  So maybe I'll just steal it in this game and then keep it.

Well I just asked for permission to do this swap.  If anyone has any ideas to make it better than a standard Elephant swap-I'm open to suggestions.

I can't start it until the last 3 books are received on my Vday swap since it's only my 3rd.  But they are all in the mail.

I like your idea, Mary. I would definitely join. It's good timing too, since the Unpostable Erotica swap just ended.I don't think you need a twist in it. I tend to not join a swap when it has a twists unless it's something easy. I like plain and simple, lol.

As for the buddy swaps, I know it's easier to go and buy your own books, but sometimes it' s like Christmas. You don't know what you are going to get but you do know it's something you want. Sometimes you get books you never thought would get posted or bought for you. That has happened to me twice in those swaps. The books were rare and hard to find, plus expensive if they were. Somehow, someway, my buddy got them for me.

Good Morning! It sounds like a good idea for a game to me Mary. Matter of fact, you can go ahead and count me in! Just send me a PM and I'll be there!

Hugs,

Kat Lady
