When you add a new shelf to your shelves, do you feel the need to go back and add previously read books to it or do you just go forward from that point on?

I try to add if I remember other books. In fact, I often resist adding new shelves, because I know I've missed so many books that would go on it -- but I usually decide that's ridiculous and add it eventually. :-)

LOL  OK, so it's probably just me then.  I have this insane urge to add all the books I can remember to a new shelf.

I if I add a new author then I try to go and pick up their books, but if it is a genre thing, then I just start from that point. Always a work in progress for me.

I used to not even have any shelves besides a few like First In a Series and Next In a Series. Once I started playing bookshelf bingo on one of the groups, I started shelving more. I will usually only shelve books as I'm adding them or happen to be looking at them.  Sometimes I get bored at work and will come on and go through my books or authors I know and do various shelves.

I kind of don't like having a lot of shelves.  I don't really look at them that often.  I'm tempted to delete them all but then if I play the next Bingo Round-I'll regret having done that.

I used to keep mine shorter, because it was annoying to search through for the ones I wanted, but now they have sticky shelves, I'm adding them right and left.

OK Willa, thanks for the "compliment".   LOL    I guess I can't help it.  I don't have as many as some friends there but I'm glad to know its probably not just me.

I don't understand what you mean by sticky shelves.  Did they used to do them differently than they do now?

Sticky shelves have only been around for a month or so. You can make some shelves "sticky" so they stay at the top of the list and you can find them easily, instead of having to do kludgey things like stick a number or a z at the beginning.

See I don't ever really look at my shelves, except to see if I've read a book or not. Not sure why I even bother putting books into genres anymore lol

Ah Ok. I have never tried anythign like that.  Mine have always been listed alphabetical.  I really don't shelve for myself to look at.  I shelve books because other people seem to like looking at themed shelves. I only look at them when I playing the bookshelf bingo.

I shelve partially to help other people, but it also helps me search for books when I can't remember the title or author. And it's just fun to think of shelf names.

Well I just found something cool on the shelves.  I didn't know you could change how the books on your shelves display.  I wanted to create a Library shelf for all the books in my TBR that my library has in 3+ of so I can purge them.  I just want title & author not cover, date I shelved it, ISBN and all that other stuff.  I never noticed the Shelf Settings button.  Pretty cook and you can do it for just one shelf. I'm doing a challenge involving publishing year and I can have that show.

Pretty cool.

I haven't even tackled shelves there yet. I finally got around to adding more books I've read this year for the 2011 Challenge.

I'm not sure how shelves work, but will get around to it eventually I'm sure. It's too late in the year to start, but I'll do it in 2012. If I can figure out that kind of shelf(ves) I want. Goodreads is still so new to me.

I decided it was too much work to make that shelf.  I'm just grabbing a stack of books at a time and looking them up and then sorting them on the spot.

I am somewhat fanatical about it, with books that I read and score now. I tried to go back and pick up what I have read before I joined GRs, but it would take me forever just on all the categories alone. I just wish there was a way to turn a view into a spreadsheet like you can here at PBS.

I'm veeeeery sloooowly moving my PBS ratings to GoodReads. I wish there was an easy way. Importing the info doesn't save the ratings, so is pretty worthless for me.

I just rate them as I read them. I'm not much of a reviewer.  For books I read before goodreads-I rate them as I come across them and guestimate the year.

I have a spreadsheet with most of my (past five years or so) books on it.... I'm VERY slowly adding that in to goodreads, but it's a struggle.  I'd much rather use that time to read, than to work on a list of what I read.  lol

That's why I don't do any of that-spreadsheets and stuff.  When I see a book on someone's shelf or that's linked that I know I read-I rate it and estimate the year. I do now keep a list of what I've read though.  I do the Serious Readers Reading Level challenge in the Nothing But Reading Challenges group.  Just a simple list what you read and every 100 books puts you up another level.
