Seriously, you guys, if you haven't joined yet, you need to - and put me on your friends list:P  It took me forever to join & Jess finally got me motivated to do it, and it's way cool.  You can just start out slow and add books from your lists here, but it has lots of great features and it makes it so much easier to track lists & especially reviews & comments.

I am on Goodreads but I am a little slow at updating my bookshelves. I like going to the groups instead. Feel free to add me as a friend.

I haven't joined any groups yet, but I'm still sorta new to it and only have 10 friends so far *snivel*.  Sherry Thomas is on my friends list tho.  But she has over 500 friends, so I'm not sure it counts for much:P

I recently had an author kinda address my GR review of a book on a popular blog, right down to quoting my use of the term "flowery" for her prose so the authors are definitely checking it out.

I'm on it, but honestly, it's just another website to try and keep track of.  I'm on too many now and lose track.

Well, I just signed up, but I don't know how to add any of you. It seems I need your name or email to do so. If anyone would like to add me, my email is csandifur86@gmail.com :-)

So how can I post a book to more than one shelf?

Cassie - you should just be able to click on anyone's link to their profile and "add as a friend." (under their profile box - it is a button)

To add books to mutiple shelves, you can click on the "edit" link on each book line in the main view or you can add multiple books to one shelf at once using the "edit" view.  (Views are listed at the top of the page).

Make sure that your shelves are not all exclusive when you create them or you won't be able to add them to multiple shelves.

I can't ever seem to add anyone with gmail, and I wonder sometimes if it's because of yahoo, or maybe even firefox.  I do a search for them at Goodreads and it always returns that nobody with that email addy is registered there.  Weird.  Anyway, here's the link to my profile page: www.goodreads.com/user/show/2299597  (which hopefully works:P) and you guys can feel free to add me if you like.

I joined months ago, maybe around the time I joined here or maybe Shelfari (?) and then couldn't figure it out and stopped updating my page. I guess I should see if I can even remember my user name and log in again. It is too many websites to keep up with, isn't it?? I'm already tracking my books here, on shelfari, and on my computer with Bookpedia!

If I am tracking everything satisfactorily on here, what would the benefit be for joining goodreads as well?

Like others are saying, I am a little concerned about tracking the same information on several sites.  I would love to hear why users like both.  :)  It would help me make up my mind.

I use Goodreads because it is easier for me to look at what books I have read, want, or that I assign to different bookshelves.  I know at PBS you can use personal tags, but they just aren't as easy to work with as goodreads.  Goodreads is just really easy to do a search through my bookshelf to see if I have a book, read it, or want it, etc...when my book list started getting out of control, it helped me a lot.  It has been wonderful for me.

I also like goodreads because there are plenty of good reviews.  I can look at a particular book and see how all my friends rated it and what their reviews are.  PBS lacks a lot of good reviews and I also don't know how my friends rated the book.  I like to know how people with similar tastes rate a book.  That will help me decide if I should move a book up or down on my TBR list.  Goodreads also combines multiples editions into one page, so you can see reviews for all formats of the book.  PBS needs to keep all editions separate for ordering purposes, so the hardcover could have a 5 star rating, but the paperback will have a 3 star rating, but they are the same book--it works out so much better when they are all together.  I don't like to look at all the different editions to see why people are giving it different ratings.

Goodreads is also easier to keep track of series.  I can either put them all on a bookshelf together or their titles tell me which book they are (once again, you can use tags here, but the bookshelves are just easier for me to work with).  I am a goodreads librarian (I think you only have to have a certain number of books on your shelf to become one) and I can fix titles and other book data.  It is so much easier than the PBS format that seems to take forever to get updated (not knocking anyone who is part of the data correction/book cover groups--it just takes a while to go through the approval system).

Thanks so much for sharing!  This definitely helps me understand the site better.  I do like the idea of seeing how someone with similar tastes rate a book.  I think that would be a useful tool.  I also like the idea of having a series together.  Right now I have the list typed out in an excel spreadsheet but if I can use a website to do it, it will make it easier to access the most up to date info both at work and at home.

I will check out the site this weekend.

Thanks so much for the info  :)

I'm a goodreads librarian also, and I am often updating and adding information to the book listings. I use goodreads every day. It's a nice way to keep up with what my friends are reading.

Jennifer - I do like the idea of seeing how someone with similar tastes rate a book.  I think that would be a useful tool.

Yeah, that's a big thing; being able to look at my friends' pages & see how they rated things before I order or buy them.  Plus I get email updates when they post reviews & comments on books, and like with someone like Jess who is reading a lot of the same things I am & has very similar tastes, if she's read & rated them already, I can find that info much easier there.  Here, if somebody doesn't post a review or you miss it in the What are we reading this week? thread, it's kinda hard to find.  It took me a couple of weeks to start getting into all of the features there, but it's like the more things I make use of, the more I like it.  Another cool thing, you can look up your favorite authors & become a fan there, and meet other people who are fans as well.  It just seems like a cool site for networking with other readers.

I just started using Goodreads for my catalog:  I had books scattered all over the house and needed a way to keep track of everything. It sounds like there's a lot of other features there that I'm not using yet.  Thanks for letting me know about them!  My email is vandana3@cox.net.... please add me as  a friend!!!!
