I'm interested in reading historical romance novels, but not interested into the short harlequin stories that i grew up with as a kid. I'm looking for all different type

of historical romance, but I want them to  have substance and not just the rip your bodice off plot line : ) If you have some suggestions as to where I can start, please

let me know.

Do you only want the Regency types? If you want to try some western historicals, too, I suggest Elizabeth Lowell, Linda Lael Miller, and Maggie Osborne.

Thank you so much. New to this genre and didn't know where to start. I don't mind there being sex in the storyline, I just don't want every single page

to be sex. I wan't there to be a story...I would like more than just the regency historical romances. I am finding out that there are several romance subgenres. : )

Thank you!

If you are interested in more than the regency historical romances, there is also Carrie Lofty and Judith James. They write in interesting settings and time periods - Lofty's What a Scoundrel Wants is Robin Hood-esque, Scoundrel's Kiss is set in Spain, and Song of Seduction is set in Salzburg, Austria (although this one is only available in e-book format). James's Broken Wing is during the Napoleonic era,  Highland Rebel is set in 1700s Scotland and England, and Libertine's Kiss is during the Restoration era. Of the above mentioned, I've only read What a Scoundrel Wants and Highland Rebel, but I absolutely loved both and I will be reading all of their other works for sure.

Jo Goodman is good. So far I've really enjoyed  her Compass Club books(there are 4) as well as A Season To Be Sinful, One Forbidden Evening, If His Kiss IS Wicked  & The Price of Desire.

Do you like emotional angsty storylines or lighter fare? Julia Quinn and Connie Brockway both write wonderful books but are lighter and more humourous - Elizabeth Hoyt is also very funny.

If you want something a bit darker and sexier,  Victoria Dahl's A Rake's Guide to Pleasure, To Tempt a Scotsman and One Week As Lovers were three very good books.
