I've had a long dry spell on finding good books, so now I'm excited.

"Immortal Muse," by Stephen Leigh, just out a few weeks ago. No spoilers here, it's all set out very early in the book: The main charcter, who first appears as a young woman in contemporary New York---and a big part of the arts scene---is really someone who's lived for centuries, always surrounding herself with truly creative people, who she helps. (No, she's not a vampire)

The book bounces back and forth in time, alternating chapters in today's world, where she's trying to "solve a problem" (don't want to give too much away) and her earlier life in certain periods of time, starting around 1300s in France and progresssing. There'lll be a chap[ter about what she's doing in NY, then the next chapter is her life in 1400s. Back to NY, then the 1500s (roughly speaking), up to present day..

It's really well-written, very original, not all cutesy, like some popular paranormals. The historical segments are terrific, and the "supernatural" parts are not over-the-top.

Just excellent.

No, I wnt back and added that. No vamps; her immortality is not a mystery, it's explained very early. That element of how it happens---and once done, it's not dwelled on---is more about about alchemy.

in historical fiction have you read any Chelsea Quin Yarbro. There is a vampire  but Yarbro get high marks for her historical research in most of her books. Her stuff is pretty old. I'm not sure if she is even alive now.
