Oh goody!  This NPC (non-prostelytizing Christian) who enjoys learning and discussing all the rivers that flow into the ocean now has a home.  Thanks, L!  Thanks, Richard!

Thanks guys; it's no biggie really.  It's fun to see it go from "Do we really need this?" to "Yes we do." to "Ok, we'll do it!"

I know you worked hard to get your own forum...congrats on getting it approved.

I can completely understand your desire to have a place of your own. Yet I'm sad to know that you felt like you needed it.  It's one thing to carry on open-minded discussions with people of different belief systems. It's another thing to feel bullied or oppressed by those same people and want to leave.  I'm truly sorry if this is how most of you feel.

I like Suzanne's term of NPC. Personally I find it fascinating to learn about what other people believe and can't guarantee that I won't be lurking in the new forum to see what everyone is talking about. The discussions in Religion & Spirituality are some of my favorite to participate in and to read...I hate to think that the opportunities for everyone to try and coexist are going to become more limited since each group will be divided into their own forums.

But I don't want this post to diminish what you have achieved. I know you are excited about this. So again, congrats.

That's a great sentiment, and easy to say when you have your own forum where you can roost.

Not commenting any further on that topic.

I'm of two minds about it. I think that non-Christians should have a place they can go to talk about their beliefs and approach to life or things they have read or things they wonder about without having someone start quoting the Bible to them as a proof of something. A person ought to be able to talk about Samhain or the pagan rituals and holidays adopted and modified by the early Christian church without being argued with as to the fact of this. A person ought to be able to discuss the nature of evil or the origins of the world without long diatribes quoting Revelation and Genesis.

And, you know, literalist Christians need to have a place where they can safely discuss creationism and whether once saved is always saved without having someone tell them they're silly or foolishly stubborn in their beliefs. (And they have this at PBS.)

I supported, and support, the separate PBS forum for those whose beliefs or values or ideas have not been appropriately respected here.

For myself, it's probably the end of any posting at PBS on any of the belief systems forums. I'm not a literalist Christian and from the threads and posts I've seen on the Christian forum, would not be at all comfortable there. On the other hand, I am a Christian, and I'm not ashamed of that, and I will not feel comfortable posting on a forum called Athiests and Others, either, nor will my views likely be welcome there.

I still think it's a darned sad state of affairs all around, but I do support the folks who want an Athiests and Pagans (or whatever it will be called) forum for safe posting. A person ought to be able to discuss feng shui or cleansing rituals or the name of their favorite demon or a bit of new archeological evidence without having Jesus shoved in their face.

The forums here are so divided now along ideological lines anyway  - political and religious - that they're next to dead. It's sad. PBS was once a vibrant community. Now we sit in little camps and nurse our grievances and mutter about the others. Sad.

Peace, my friends.

Les

Les, I don't think anyone would complain if you put your 0.02 into any thread in the "Atheists and Others" forum.  There are a few people here (you are one of them) who know how to talk about issues without resorting to the personal  "my religion is better than yours" and/or "you're all going to hell" arguments we see so often.  And the creation of the new forum doesn't mean that this forum will die, necessarily, if they decide to keep it.

It didn't use to be that way.  In fact, it's been about the last year or so where it's devolved into the sad state it's in now.  Over that year, a lot of articulate, intelligent posters have left.  And yes, it is a shame and it is sad.

From L:  That's a great sentiment, and easy to say when you have your own forum where you can roost.

Not commenting any further on that topic.

L, you do not have to comment on this any further if you don't want to, and this post is not intended to make you do so.

In case my last post didn't come across the way I intended it to, I really am genuinely happy that everyone who wanted to get their own forum got it.  All of you will have your own forum where you can roost as well.  In no way do I hold that against you.  And in no way do I think that only the Christians deserve a safe haven and phooey on everyone else.  You deserve your own space as well.  Please don't think that I ever implied that you don't.

I have never posted on the Christian Book Recommendation forum... perhaps that will have to change. I think what I was trying to say in my last post was this: All of the Christians are supposed to get filtered over to the CBR forum. All of the atheists/agnostics/others are going to get filtered over to their own forum.  I'm guessing that will leave very few people with very few options for topics in the Religion & Spirituality forum.  I hope that is not the case because I will be sad to lose those general discussions with people from all different backgrounds.  But if everyone gets separated into their own camps, I fear that will be the case.

My hope is that R&S will still live on, that the people who want to (and are able to) carry on civilized conversations can do so respectfully.  The differnece would be that each major group now has their own safe haven to retreat to as needed, and that the common ground of R&S can still exist.

I agree with the sentiment of Lester's post.  I'm glad that you got your own forum.  I'm sad for some of the reasons you felt like you needed it.  And while I enjoy learning about and sharing new ideas, I also agree with Lester in that I would feel intrusive posting in your new forum, and would worry about how those posts would be recieved. I don't know what I'll end up doing but I can also see me posting less, and I don't really post that much as it is.

That's pretty much all I have to say on the topic, so I guess that I'm now done with it as well.

In all sincerity, I wish you all the best in your new forum. I hope it provides you with the serenity and safety you were looking for.

Sorry Amy - I was probably being more contrary that I needed to be.  I just posted what I did because the people who don't seem to understand the NEED for the new forum are those who already have their own forum.  Not that you are one of these people - it's just the same sentiment we have heard a number of times.

I understand how you and Lester might feel sad in that you may be "losing" input from those of many backgrounds.  I don't think that's necessarily the case.  I also don't think that input from you guys would be unwelcome as long as it's done in the spirit of the forum.  In other words, you wouldn't go into GLBTQ and post anti-gay rhetoric (though, unbelievably, a few have) so I wouldn't expect you to come into "Atheists and others" and post statements about how Christianity is the only true "way" to a relationship with God, etc.  The designation of a safe haven is what we need - a place where we know we can post what we want without repercussion.  I don't see that as a "no Christians allowed" forum, but rather, one where certain types of comments would be inappropriate.  Does that make sense?

Anyway, sorry again, if I came off toady- not my intention!
