A story of a girl who has no one and learns to live on her own. While sad at the beginning it goes through a down part of her life and has to find herself. The first time I read it it held no meaning to me the second time I read the book it made sense and I made a connection to it. A very well written book that I would recommend for all teens.

Every time I read Alice Hoffman, I am amazed at the way she writes. Every color is a feeling, every feeling is palpable. This book made me want to weep and sigh and smile all within its short 116 pages. And the artwork on the cover and bookjacket....amazing.
I couldn't recommend this to enough people. Her stories are like fairy tales...you almost can't believe what she's writing, and yet you can...and you're better for having read it....

I believe this is a book geared towards young adults, but I really think anyone could enjoy it. Written after the tragedy of September 11th the story takes place in a no-name town that could be Anywhere, USA. Obviously based on 9/11 happenings, it's the story of what happens to a girl when she has to fend for herself and make a new family.

It's a very magical and surreal story, the wording and language makes you feel as if you are in a dream. It's very poetic, yet as you are reading it you understand that she is writing about real life.

I would definitely recommend it.

Left on her own when her family dies in a terrible disaster, fifteen year old Green is haunted by loss and by the past. Struggling to survive physically and emotionally in a place where nothing seems to grow and ashes are everywhere, Green retreats into the ruined realm of her garden. But in destroying her feelings, she also begins to destroy herself, erasing the girl she'd once been as she inks darkness into her skin. It is only through a series of mysterious encounters that Green can relearn the lessons of love and begin to heal enough to tell her story.

A short story. Hoffman tends to be a little weird but this one is even stranger than usual.

This story is thin but mighty. It's about survival and healing from an emergency disaster and terrible loss. The main character is no more than just a teenager girl but she's left to fend on her own, and eventually to find her own way in creating a new world. It's a very touching. I would strongly recommend it.
