A true historical classic of the Sioux indians. Slow to start, but then a can't-put-down book, with engaging characters and plot and informative history. A classic.

"You become a member of the Mahto band in their seasonal migrations at the turn of the eighteenth century. You gallop with the warriors triumphantly journeying home with scalps, horses and captive women. You join the ceremonies of grief and joy where women trill, men dance, and the killtales are told. You share the sexual initiations and the lonely quests of war with the 'dreaming pair' Abbleza and Tonweya, the braves who battle to preserve their heritage and their identity."

I enjoyed the book rereading it after having read it in the eighties. Back then we did not have Google, and everything you read about the book and the author now points to it being a fabrication of actual Lakota history. I have read many history based novels and enjoy them, but it appears this one may have been a sham. So, read it if you are looking for a novel, pass if you are trying to learn of the Lakota peoples.

The first 100 pages of this one has stains on the bottom but in no way detracts from reading or the enjoyment of this wonderful book!
