My January reading list:

Finished -

  1. "THE KISS" by Danielle Steel (A+) Isabelle Forrester is the wife of a prominent Parisian banker who has long ago shut her out of his heart. For years Isabelle has lived a life of isolation, caring for her desperately ill son and her teenage daughter. She allows herself one secret pleasure: a long distance friendship with a Washington power broker who like Isabelle is trapped in an empty marriage. To Bill Robinson, Isabelle is a godsend, a kindred spirit who touches him across the miles. Their relationship is a lifeline that sustains them both through the heartache of marriages they will not betray. Agreeing to meet for a few innocent days in London, Isabelle and Bill find their friendship changing. Then, amid the sudden crash of steel they are thrust onto a new path frought with pain but also possibility. Now inside a London hospital, Isabella and Bill cling to life. In the weeks that follow they transverse a road to recovery littered with challenges of the body, spirit and heart. Together, they must find the strength to embrace life again. But changing relationships and another loss conspire  to separate them once more. And this time they could lose each other forever.
  2. "FOR THE TWINS' SAKE" by Jillian Hart (Love Inspired - Tiny Blessings #1) (A) To: Pilar, Anne, Rachel From: Meg Re: I'm getting MARRIED! You all know that I didn't ever plan to get married again, but I just found out that my son has a twin brother who was accidently adopted separately. So Jared Kierney and I are getting married for their sake. You remember Jared, my high school nemesis? He's a reporter now, gorgeous as ever. I didn't expect to be breathless when he proposed this marriage of convenience, but I was! Yet part of me wonders, are we being united by a Higher Power...for love's sake?
  3. "BROUGHT TOGETHER BY BABY" by Carolyne Aarsen (Love Inspired - Tiny Blessings #2) (A) To: Anne, Meg, Pilar From: Rachel Re: Updates on Mom, baby Gracie and the hunky doc! Well mom is making great strides in physical therapy, and taking care of Gracie is an unexpected joy. Because my adopted baby sister was a preemie, she's had lots of checkups...and her green-eyed pediatrician is gorgeous! Each time we visit Eli Cavanaugh, he makes me want to embrace life, finally let my hair out of its almost-daily bun and dream a little. I have to tell you, being temporary mommy is making me long for a family of my own...with Eli!
  4. "AN ACCIDENTAL HERO" by Loree Lough (Love Inspired - Accidental Blessings #1) (A-) A head-on collision with burned-out rodeo star Reid Alexander is the last thing actress Cammi Carlisle needs! Pregnant, widowed and considered a "has-been," Cammi is returning to her family's Texas ranch in search of forgiveness. Little does she know that Reid wants her forgiveness. Though there's sizzling chemistry between them Reid knows a relationship would never work. Unbeknownst to Cammi, Reid was the one driving the pickup that killed her mother years ago. Even though it was a tragic accident with no one at fault, how will she ever forgive him when he can't even forgive himself?
  5. "SWEET BABY" by Sharon Sala (A+) Little girl lost...It all happened a long time ago, so long ago that Tory Lancaster no longer remembered being a little girl who came home to an empty house. Tory is a woman now, trying to leave behind a legacy of abandonment and sorrow, desperate to love but forever afraid to trust. Only in Brett Hooker's arms does she find peace, but there's something Brett doesn't know, something even she doesn't know. A woman found...Tory Lancaster is about to come face-to-face with her past, a past haunted by a mysterious tattooed man and the doll that was her only friend. With Brett's help she can meet the past head-on - if it doesn't drive them apart. So many secrets, so little time and all for the love of Sweet Baby.
  6. "DAWN IN ECLIPSE BAY" by Jayne Ann Krentz (Eclipse Bay Trilogy #2) (A) Nothing was ever simple between a Madison and a Harte. The feud that had divided their families still simmered. Now, only months after their siblings' wedding, Lillian Harte and Gabe Madison are at each other's throats. Successful CEO Gabe had insisted on becoming a client of Lillian's matchmaking service. And after five disastrous dates, Lillian is at her wit's end. If she hadn't already decided to close her business and move home to Eclipse Bay, Gabe would have been the final straw. But when she finds Gabe at her door demanding she fulfill their business contract, the sparks between them suddenly turn personal. Once again, Eclipse Bay will witness a showdown - between a relentless Madison and an irresistible Harte.
  7. "THERE AND NOW" by Linda Lael Miller (B-) Seeking refuge, Elisabeth McCartney returned to her centuries-old family home, never dreaming stepping over the threshold would take her one hundred years into the past - and into the sweet, sensual embrace of Dr. Jonathan Fortner. He wants forever, but she knows forever is the one thing they don't have. Because even if she can prevent the tragedy, she knows will strike him, they are separated by two worlds, denied by destiny. Unless love can find a time of its own.
  8. "COLLECTION 3" by Elizabeth Lowell (abridged Audio Cassette book) - "Eden Burning" (A++) Chase Wilcox is drawn to the lush beauty of the island of Hawaii and the secrets it holds - while escaping the destruction of his own personal world. The island is home to many unexpected wonders, which is why Nicole Ballard could never leave. Joined on a scientific project, Nicole and Chase will be forced to confront their own lingering inner darkness, while resisting a newly inflamed need to touch, to give, to care. "Midnight in Ruby Bayou" (A) Since the breakup of a disappointing love affair, Faith Donovan has poured her heart and soul into making the exquisite artistic jewelry favored by the rich and famous. She needs rubies of the finest quality and to get them she needs Owen Walker, a man with an intimate knowledge of the ruby trade. Soon the two are drawn into a terrifying web of greed, corruption and betrayal that has them racing for their lives. "Tell Me No Lies" (A) Lindsay Danner. Her worldwide reputation as an expert in ancient treasures and her knowledge of the international art market make her the perfect pawn in a deadly game. But she needs protection. Jacob MacArthur Catlin. A renegade CIA agent whose name is still whispered in tones of hatred and admiration throughout Southeast Asia. Now it is his job to make sure Lindsay Danner succeeds...and lives.
  9. "HIDDEN FIRES" by Sandra Brown (A+) The moment preacher's daughter Lauren Holbrook walked into the Texas mansion, she suspected she had been tricked. Instead of becoming wealthy Olivia Lockett's secretary, the matriarch presented her with a scandalous offer: to marry, in name only, the Lockett dynasty's heir - womanizing rebel Jared Lockett. Lauren could not know Olivia's real motive, but she was all too aware of her feelings for Jared. Now, in spite of terrible risks, she had to trust her reckless husband - and fight to make their marriage as strong as her love.
  10. "FORGET ME NOT" Elizabeth Lowell (unabridged Audio CD book) (A) The terrible tragedy Alana Reeves suffered on Wyoming's Broken Mountain has vanished from her memory. Now nothing remains of those six lost days that cost her everything she held dear. But a man has appeared from the shadows of Alana's past - a rugged outdoorsman who once dwelt in a wounded heart he is now sworn to heal. Like an answered prayer, Rafe Winter has come to lead Alana out of the darkness - and back to the scene of the nightmare she has erased from her mind. Alana must follow him - for in Rafe's powerful arms her fears can be conquered, and through his love hers can be reborn.
  11. "ONE FOR THE MONEY" Janet Evanovich (abridged Stephanie Plum #1) (Audio Cassette book) (A) In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey. Out of work, and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty. Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures she can learn what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one - who also happens to be the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie's virginity at age sixteen. There's still powerful chemistry between these two, so the chase could be as interesting as it is dangerous.
  12. "VOYAGER" by Diana Gabaldon (Outlander #3) (unabridged Audible book) (A++) Diana Gabaldon's magnificent historical saga, begun with Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, continues with this New York Times best seller. Set in the intriguing Scotland of 200 years ago, the third installment in the romantic adventures of Jamie and Claire is as compelling as the first. Now that Claire knows Jamie survived the slaughter at Culloden, she is faced with the most difficult decision of her life. She aches to travel back through time again to find the love of her life, but, in order to do that, she must leave their daughter behind. It has been 20 years since she and Jamie were forced to separate. Can she risk everything, maybe even her life, on a gamble that their love has withstood the long, rigorous test of time? Diana Gabaldon's powerful, witty, and heroic characters lend themselves well to the rich, melodic narration accorded them by Davina Porter. Under her spell, listeners find themselves transported back through time to exciting, faraway places alive with people they would enjoy knowing.
  13. "THE HOUSE ON OLIVE STREET" by Robyn Carr (A) Elly, Sable, Barbara Ann and Beth. They have been drawn together by the sudden death of their friend Gabby - and the favor she has asked of them. For these four women, whose own lives have become unhappy works of fiction, a summer spent sorting through Gabby's personal papers offers the perfect challenge - and the perfect escape. Elly - the intellectual spinster who's hidden herself with the walls of academia, afraid to admit that she's tired of being alone. Sable - her bestselling novels have made her a star, but the woman who has everything in fact has nothing except a past she's desperate to hide. Barbara Ann - the talent behind twenty-six romance novels, who wakes up one day to find she's lost control of her career, her sanity and her family. Beth - her popular mysteries have become the only way she can fight back against the secret tyranny of her abusive husband. In the house on Olive Street, away from their menagerie of troubles, these women will discover something marvelous: themselves, each other and pieces of a dream that only they can make happen. For in telling the hidden story of a remarkable woman, their own lives are about to change.
  14. "PALE MOON RISING" by Ginna Gray (A) Years ago, Joe Connally married Olivia Jones because it was the right thing to do. But when they lost the baby, there seemed to be no need to carry on the charade. Olivia put her broken heart on a shelf and set out to leave her past, and its pain, behind. As an interior designer, Olivia is just beginning to make her mark and has won the coveted job of restoring Mallenegua, a massive stone mansion situated on a private island off the coast of South Carolina. But unexpectly she comes face-to-face with the husband she loved and lost - the project architect is Joe Connally. While the passion still lingers, so does the hurt and the fierce hostility of his scheming family, who will do anything to drive Olivia away. When strange things begin to happen at the old mansion, Olivia is drawn into a deadly scheme that could ultimately cost her her life.

I'm reading Anita Shreve's Change in Altitude.  So far, so good.  I always like the fact tht each of Shreve's books is totally different from her others.

Happy 2010!

I just finished "Secrets of Sant' Angelo" by Jeff Shapiro (pleasantly surprised to find it a very good read, considering it had been on my TBR shelf for a few years).  Now onto "The Chancellor Manuscript" by Robert Ludlum.

Happy 2010!

Deeper Than the Dead by Tami Hoag - It has been a while since I've read this author, but I really enjoyed this mystery/crime novel set in 1985 before the days of DNA profiling.

The Bricklayer by Noah Boyd - I had an ARC of this book passed on it me by a friend. I found Mr. Boyd's debut crime novel to be well written and very interesting. This is the first in a series, and I look forward to his next effort.

The Turnaround by George Pelecanos - This is my first time reading this author and I will definitely be placing his prior work on my wish list. Very well written crime novel.

While I'm Falling by Laura Moriarty - I couldn't finish this one. Boring, it was as bad as her last book and I will not be reading any more of her books.

Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls - this book has generated terrific reviews and while I loved "The Glass Castle", I could not get into this book and abandoned it after the first 50 or so pages. I found it boring.

White Nights by Ann Cleeves - This was a new author for me, but I had read great reviews of her books and decided to give her a try. I couldn't get past the first 25 or so pages. I found the writing to be sort of old fashioned and I couldn't get past that.

Faceless Killers by Henning Mankell -.  I love Scandinavian police procedurals. This was a good read and I will continue to read this author, but Arnaldur Indridason remains my favorite.

Henry's Sisters by Cathy Lamb -  Most reviewers have loved this book, but I couldn't finish it. I thought the characters were cartoonish. Sad, since her first two books were wonderful. I won't be recommending this one to anybody.

The Penny Tree by Holly Kennedy - A terrific read about love, divorce and the toll that a child's life threatening illness can take on a marriage. I will be looking to read more from this author.

Currently reading:  Echoes From the Dead by Johan Theorin. Another Scandinavian police procedural. This is my first time reading this author. So far, so good.

Up next: The Secret Keepers by Mindy Freedle

                Don't Move by Margaret Mazzantini

The Second Virgin Birth by Tommy Taylor

The Reach of a Chef by Michael Ruhlman

2.  Gatsby's Girl - Caroline Preston : Very well done.  I especially like how in her Author's Notes she clarifies which parts are historical and which are fiction.  A lot of times when I go to look up a subject it's harder to figure it out.   Very entertaining story inspired by one of my all time favorite authors.
