HARDCASE by Dan Simmons If you enjoy excessive force and gratuitous violence as I do, then Joe Kurtz is your man. An ex-con former P.I., Kurtz has no problem working without a license investigating an attempted take down of a Buffalo area mob boss. Aptly named, this is the first Kurtz adventure and with numbers two and three titled Hard Freeze and Hard As Nails, I dont think Simmons is going to pick up many cozy readers. But for the rest of us

You cannot help recalling Mickey Spillane's "Mike Hammer" to the main character in this book, "Joe Kurtz". The language is updated (read that somewhat more vulgar) but the writing comes near the quality of Spillanesw.
