Hi All -

Just curious if I can get an answer here - since I'm not seeing it quickly in help (I'm probably typing in the wrong words to search)

Is a hardcover book able to be posted if it has a tear in the dust cover?

Opening the mail yesterday, I tore a piece from the dust cover - and am curious once I'm done reading if I can repost.

Yes, unless there is a Dust Jacket RC.  The cover itself must be okay.  But the dust cover can be damaged.   (Search under Book Criteria.)

From Help:

Dust Jacket:

  • The DUST JACKET (this is not the same as the cover of a book) does not have to be included with a book at all, unless the requestor had this in their Requestor Conditions.
  • So DUST JACKET condition cannot be considered as part of the condition of a book, unless there were Requestor Conditions on the request specifying that the dust jacket be included.
  • If the Dust Jacket was to be included as specified in the Requestor Conditions on the request, the Dust Jacket must meet the same conditions as defined for the cover, below.

Short answer, Yes.

Dustjackets are not required for hardcover books. Therefore, the dustjacket can be in any condition, or missing altogether, for a regular hardcover book request. Ripped is just fine. (although if it has something gross on it like a food stain, I might throw it away instead of sending it).

However, some members will place a Requestor Condition on their book requests, requiring that hardcovers should have the dustjacket. In that case, the dustjacket must be present, and it must be in the same postable condition that a paperback cover must be in (no water damage, no stains, no rips larger than 1 inch, are the major points).

What they said  yes  Yes, a hardcover can be postable without the dust jacket (if condition otherwise meets PBS criteria).  Unless the requestor has an RC that requires the dust jacket.

Many members send the damaged dust jacket along anyway, unless it's just gross and dirty.

That is what I thought - but on the break time that day - I couldn't find the guidelines in help - hence the question.

Thank you again
