Seventeen-year-old Cerin, raised by the tinker witch-wife Tess Kelledy, feels different from the other boys of Wran Cheaping, but doesn't know why. Then he meets the mysterious Grey Rose, lone survivor of the war that devastated the Trembling Landsand promised bride of the terrible Waster, Yarac Stone-Slayer. Cerin pledges to her his friendship and help in trouble, beginning the journeys of adventure that will make him Cerin Songweaver.

This very early de Lint fantasy, first of the Songweaver novels, has elicited comparisons to Tolkien, not always favorable.
