Often when I first go to paperbackswap.com, before I log in, I am now treated to a big bright row of pictures of bare-chested men and bodice-ripped women on pink-framed covers under the heading of Recently Posted Books Available for Request.  I realize romance novels make up a significant portion of the database of books in paperbackswap, but I am male and a science fiction fan.  This big visual display of books I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole would certainly deter me from coming back if I wasn't already a member.

I am a male SF fan as well, and I am completely neutral about those books.  I just click on "my account" as soon as the page loads, and never really notice the rest.

I'm not offended by romance books or covers, in fact I think it's good that the covers are distinctive.  It lets me know when I'm in the wrong aisle at the bookstore, or looking at a website that isn't likely to interest me.

I know I'm really home when I see planets with rings around them.  ;)

To add a row of books more suitable to your taste, go to My Account / Settings & use the Favorite Genre Selector at the very bottom of the page. This pushes the Recently Posted Books down & lets you get a quick sample of your faves. Haven't found a way to eliminate it completely.

Scott out.

Yup.  That's what I did when the new page went up.  Trouble is, I only see my preferences after I log in.

I'm interested in seeing the number of sf books in the db increase, so don't want to scare away people like myself, who might not have an account yet.
