I'm not sure how long this has been going on, maybe year at this point, but our postal carriers no longer ring the doorbell when putting a package on the porch.  Today when I came home for lunch, I found two packages of books in an odd location that the carrier must have thought would be safe.  These were delivered yesterday before we had a slight snow and even thought he books were on the porch (covered) and behind a snow shovel, the packages were wet.  Good news was the were all put in moisture-proof wrapping but were not wrapped inside the initial mailing package.  Those books would have been soaked if they had been put in a paper wrapper of any sort.

Do other people have problems with this?  Don't ask me to talk to the post office.  We have brought other issues to their attention and their response is things are our problem not theirs, even though they are clearly in the wrong.

Place a weather proof container (ie, cooler) on your porch next to the door.  Attach a sign "Postal carrier, please place packages in this container.  Thank you."  Just remember, the postal carrier is under no obligation to use the container, as it is not an approved USPS receptacle.

you can make a complaint at USPS.com . If you just go into the post office, or call, there is no paper trail, they can just blow you off. If you complain on the website, the branch manager has to respond within a day or so and their superiors can see how they handled the complaint.

Good ideas already posted, and I did get a response (and action) when I used the USPS complaint function.
