This is driving me crazy....Lol   I bought this book , its on my WL. I'm trying to add it to my TBR list. When I type in the isbn # ,its saying something like " cant find a match"   So I look for it by author and here it is  Real  , however that is not the # on my book. this is the number on my book. 978 1 4767 6198 5.   When I'm finished , I'd like to post it. but how.?  I dont want to post the wrong#.

Also ,as far as I can tell its not made in any other format?

If your ISBN doesn't come up in the system, you need to post it as though it did not have an ISBN -- you can't post it under a different ISBN that isn't on your book.

If you are entering the correct ISBN, and a listing comes up that does not match your book (or no listing comes up), read below for solutions.   It is NOT okay to post your book using a listing on which the information doesn't describe your book properly.  Author, ISBN (if there is one), title and booktype must all match.  Book cover image, publication date, etc.do not need to match. Posting your book correctly is a cardinal rule at PBS.

The reason that the listing in the database must match your book is that this is the ONLY information that a requestor has about your book when he or she requests it.

If your book does not match the book requested, she or he may be disappointed, and may mark your book "received with a problem (wrong book)", and ask you for the credit back.

Solutions to Common Book Posting Problems:

Problem: You enter an ISBN on the Post Books page, click the Check button, and nothing happens.

Explanation First check to see if you are using the Firefox browser with the extension "NoScript".  If you are, read this: NoScript and PaperBackSwap.  If you are NOT running Firefox with NoScript, then check that you are entering the ISBN correctly (see above).

If you are entering the ISBN correctly, then this means that the ISBN isn't recognized by the database.

  • The PBS database is compiled elswhere, and sometimes has missing items.  Many of these will be added in the future during routine database updates.  In the meantime, books with unrecognized ISBNs need to be Posted with customized listings, using the "Post a Book Without an ISBN" link on the Post Books page.

SolutionYou will need to post this book with a customized listing for the book, using the Post Books without an ISBN link on the Post Books page.

Hope this helps.

Lisa, it's possible that the ISBN listing will be showing up here by the time you've finished the book.  I just did a search for 9781476761985 (no spaces) and you probably did too.  That search will trigger the server to look for information on that ISBN next time it does an update.  If it finds info, it will import the listing.

If there's no listing when you need one, try entering the ISBN on the Post Books page.  Often you will be allowed to create an ISBN listing.  Otherwise, you'll post it without an ISBN.  The server will assign a 6-digit number to your copy of the book.

Also, check the publisher's page of your book -- the page following the title page -- to see if there's another ISBN there.  Sometimes the ISBN on the outside of the book is wrong, but the one on the publisher's page can be trusted.

It's extremely common that editions of books from other countries have ISBNS that will be neither found or imported automatically by searching on PBS. You can add the listing yourself by posting the book by ISBN, as long as the numbers make a valid ISBN, the system will let you create the listing for the book, using the real ISBN. I've done it multiple times myself, as I order books from a  discounter that gets overruns from Canada and Australia.

I have personal experience with this particular book and this specific ISBN. This book 9781476761985 is the Target Exclusive edition of the book "Real" by Katy Evans. It is not the same as the regular edition as it has a BONUS chapter at the end that is not included in the other editions. It also has the "Target" brand on the front cover.

I've inputted this ISBN into PBS for several MONTHS now hoping that eventually it will show up in our database but there's been no success with it showing up. I finally gave up and offered it to a member who requested Bk 2 of the same series.

I believe, Lisa, your best course of action will be to create your own non-ISBN for this edition of the book. I'm sure it will be requested quickly!

Paula, you're amazing.  That's great info!

Lisa, each book should have it's own listing if you are posting the books to your bookshelf here.  If someone orders the first book, you can let them know you have the second, but can't require them to take it.  But... you can offer the two as a set in the Book Bazaar discussion forum, and you could ask either one or two credits for the two books.

I think you should post the book using the real ISBN. You woudl be doing everyone else here who buys the book and wants to post it a favor.

Go to "Post Books", enter the ISBN, and the page will automatically open to add the listing yourself. PBS wants you to do this ... that's why the page opens automatically for you to do so.

I just tested it, it works. I backed out without entering anything because I don't have the book in front of me, else I just would have added it myself.

There is no reason to find weird alternate ways to offer this book.

ISBNs are created by algorithm, which means that there is computer logic that can check if a ISBN number is a valid ISBN, regardless of whether it calls up a listing in PBS or not. You can create new listings for ANY valid ISBN number that is not already listed in the PBS system. I usually do a Search first, just in case the listing will get automatically pulled into PBS, thus saving me the work of adding it, but in every case (in the probably 100 or so times I've pulled a listing into PBS by searching for it) the listing shows up within 1 or 2 minutes. If 10 or 15 minutes have gone by and a 2nd Search doesn't reveal the listing, then I just add it myself.  If days have gone by and the listing is never pulled automatically, then it isn't going to be, and you can feel free to add it yourself. PBS wants you to do it.

It also commonly happens with "Barnes& Noble" special edition books, store editions (Walmart and Sam's Club also seem to have store editions sometimes) and most books sold with a different ISBN in other countries. Most of these type of listings do not exist in the database that PBS is pulling information from.

That's good info, Sara.  I had no idea you could add an ISBN to the site that way.  I've always just used the "post without an ISBN" option, which frustrates me when it has one.  Thanks!

I thought it was pretty common knowledge. That's why I didn't elaborate on my first answer more clearly.

Well, you learn something new everyday here! Thanks, Sara, for sharing that. I don't normally have an issue with finding an ISBN on PBS for a book that I have in my hand so this particular book was a puzzle for me as to why it wouldn't show up in our database. I knew I couldn't have been the ONLY one to have bought my copy at Target ;o}

So I tried Sara's suggestion and it worked! I was able to input all the data for ISBN: 9781476761985 and we now have a listing for this edition on PBS.

I will alert Lisa directly that she can post her copy whenever she is ready just in case she doesn't come back to see this post.
