you came right out and told everyone you weren't happy
and that made everyone smile
plucked before your time, to preserve the existing
everyone hoped you'd understand

what a sight we must've been, all blue and hidden from you
everyone wanted to be there
maybe that's why you chose to come early
and avoid everyone's inability to be an adult around you

but even bravery can fall short when you're that tiny
everyone knows the outside world is tough
but to skip her loving arms out of necessity
made everyone hold their breath

twice the ocean in both lungs
everyone hoped you'd swim
a tiny hole in the place of love
everyone hoped you'd mend

guardians in white tried to soothe you with plastic hands
everyone hoped they would succeed
but you only did half your time inside
and everyone knows that's not enough

so you were given a tent to wait until nine
everyone loaned you their breath
to be dispensed by a cold machine
that everyone seemed to have faith in

vigilant mama in her chair by the tent
everyone knew she wanted inside
since you couldn't come out to play
everyone helped mama cry

the line of attackers never slowed
everyone wanted to help
just give us each one of your problems
and everyone would pull through

but where oceans had departed, invaders could reach
and everyone knew you were much too tired
to keep making stands on pinky-sized legs
but everyone hoped, perhaps selfishly, that you'd try

and try you sure did, a soldier like your mom and dad
taken from your tent in a foreign land
when the guardians' guardians said "This is the end."
given a few minutes to live, you were given the unknown

the only one who shared your every minute
took you in her arms and waited
while trying to impart a lifetime's love
that maybe you could take with you

thirty minutes out was a lifetime for you
but you looked in mama's eyes and made the most of it
and when the end finally came, you just closed your's
and mama didn't have to be brave anymore

On this vast world's other side, everyone's Gunner died.
