Judith Sternberg Newman was a nurse in Breslau, Germany, when the Nazis ordered 10,000 Jews to be deported from that city to Auschwitz and other death camps. This very detailed, personal memoir is very difficult to read as she witnessed unbelievable atrocities during the 2.5 years of her incarceration. What makes the story different is that she chronicles what life was like for displaced people after the liberation, going back through a bombed out Germany to return to her home city. A very moving and powerful book.
