Whenever you see a book that promotes attachment parenting, please tag the book!  The more members using the tag "Attachment Parenting", the more likely that tag will show up on the Club Tag Cloud.  It's not the number of times a tag is used, but the number of members using that tag that cause it to show up on the Club Tag Cloud.  Even if another member has already tagged the book with the term "Attachment Parenting", tag it again with the same wording.  Here are a few of my favorite books:

What on earth is attachment parenting? Can you parent without an attachment? I can't see how.

LOL Tracy!  That phrase rubs me wrong.  Like Play Date.  My parents never called it that, yet I still had them.  Does everything need a name?

I doesn't make sense to me to tag a book that is already tagged just because of seeing it in that cloud. Anyone else thinks that's stupid ?

Here's what it says in the help center about tagging a book more than once with the same tag:

  • Others can see your tags--if they are among the 15 most-commonly applied tags to that book listing.
  • When you view a book you will see ALL of the tags you have applied to it, as well as the 15 tags that have been most commonly applied to that book by all members.  Less-commonly applied tags will not necessarily show, especially if a book has had many different tags applied to it.

So if you see the tags that you apply why do we need to?

"So if you see the tags that you apply why do we need to?"

Because the way the tag system works, once a book has more than fifteen tags, the one that is the least used won't be seen by the general public.  This isn't a problem if a book only has three or four tags, but the way to make sure a tag is always seen by a book is if multiple members tag the book with the same tag.  Make sense?  This is also generally how the new Club Tag Cloud is working.  Whereas before a single member could tag lots and lots of books (remember the CarmieRL tag?) and have it show up on the Tag Cloud, now the tag cloud shows tags that are used by multiple members.  So, right now, the only tags on the Club Tag Cloud are ones that are being used by 30 or more members in PBS (i.e., "math", "Stephanie Plum", or "Texas").

Let's get some more subject areas on that Tag Cloud!  I just happen to be promoting the "attachment parenting" tag right now.

But what I am asking is why do we need to see your tag?

Well, I generally find tags useful for finding similar books.  Using this example of "attachment parenting" tags, if I read one book with that tag, maybe I'd like to read some others with that same subject matter.  By clicking on the tag, I can get a whole list of books that have been tagged with "attachment parenting" (or Texas, or mystery, or fill-in-the-blank).  By getting enough members (about 30) to use the tag "attachment parenting" at least one time, it would show up on the Club Tag Cloud and make it easier for someone interested in that subject matter to find books they might not have otherwise known about.  Make sense?

You may not need to see Stephanie's tags, but someone else might be interested in books on attachment parenting. Not all books with that philosophy will come up in a search so they can click on the attachment parenting tag from one book and see the list of all books with the attachment parenting tag (no matter who tagged them). It is a great way to get more ideas of books you may be interested in. This is true for any kind of tag, my son is just beginning to read, so a "beginning reader" tag on a book he has read would lead me to a bunch of other books he might be able to read himself.

Edited to add that Stephanie and I must have been answering at the same time :).

It seems to me that if someone else is interested in attachment parenting, they will tag books "attachment parenting". And then they can see all of the attachment parenting tags!

That's the way it is set up to work. If each person tags books in the areas they are interested in, the tags become more useful for everybody--especially if as they are typing in their tag they noticed someone else has a similar one and apply that exact tag instead of some variation of their own. That is why/how tags should show up in the tag cloud: many members are interested in that subject and are therefore naturally applying it to appropriate books for their own use.

I think the cloud would become pointless if a bunch of people decided to say "Oh great! cool idea! Everybody start applying my favorite tags to books so they will show up in the cloud. You can start with apply this tag to these books!"
