I'm trying to remember the title of a book I read.  It has two human children who are stranded on a planet because of a spaceship crash, and they encounter an alien which is, basically, a pack of dog-like creatures.  The creatures look like individuals, but have a group mind and can't survive alone as solitary beings.  There's an evil warlord trying to take over the pack beings world, and various other plot twists.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Sure sounds like "A Fire Upon the Deep" by Vernor Vinge. The dog-like creatures were the Tines. Long snake-like necks?

Look at the plot summary on Wiki ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Fire_Upon_the_Deep ) to make sure.

Hope this helps!

Definitely Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep".  Great SF.

Yes!  Thank you!  I thought Vinge was the author but was afraid to say it in case I was wrong.

Thank you both so much!
