It's fiction set in pre-revolutionary war New England.  I read it a long time and I've been remembering it in bits and pieces.  Part of the story included an Indian raid on a small town and a young man being captured by them.  He lived with them several years and adopted their ways.  They called him Deerfoot.

Any thoughts?

Possibly "The Lost Trail" by Edward S. Ellis? This book was published late 19th or early 20th century. I'm not sure about the plot but it did have a character named Deerfoot.

Edward Ellis wrote more than one book with the Deerfoot character. They were written in the 1880's.

No, it's more modern than that.  Written in the late 70s or early 80s.   One scene I remember clearly was when Deerfoot was living with the Indians, they held a shooting contest.   Deerfoot was on the verge of losing when it was discovered that the indian he was shooting against was cheating.  A friend of his was hiding in a tree last then 20 ft from the target they were shooting at.

Wasn't it.  Thanks for trying, though.
