This is the problem:  My mom can't remember the author or the name...and only vaguely the plot.  She knows it's science fiction.  she knows she read it when she was a teenager (so probably published sometime in the late 50's through 60's).  Can anyone help me?

Plot as she remembers:  guy who lives in a world dominated by manufacturing finds a path or something to another world that is all about farming and the agrarian life.  Then he finds another path to another world that is all about entertainment...video games, tv, movies, etc. and there's another world where the food comes out of the walls (or something like that -- in other words, they don't know that food has to be grown).  Then he discovers that all the worlds are really actually levels of a spacecraft that left Earth and is hurtling through space.  no one knows where they are going and have forgotten why they are going there.  Anyway, he is the hero and links all the worlds together to figure out where and why and they get to where they are going...  she said it was WAY ahead of its time in thinking about video games, etc. and she said it was almost like political satire?  or at least a commentary on life on earth...

Anyone have ANY ideas of what this might be????

Thanks for your help!!

Brandi

I totally know this book!  but I can't remember the name right now.  Hopefully the name will percolate to the top of my memory soon so l can retrieve it for you.

I actually remembered... Brian Aldiss Non-Stop.  It doesn't quite match but it's close.   But Heinlein wrote one like this too called Orphans of the Sky.  I hope one of those is it.

I found them both and read the blurbs to my mom... She thinks it might be Orphans of the Sky, so we'll go with that first.  Thank you for your help!!!
