I had a book on my wish list become available last week, only to receive a note from owner that is had torn/taped pages.  I told here I didn't want, and she canceled.  Today the book comes up again, once more the owner emails to say .... same book, just decline.

My dilemma,  If I decline Will I loose the place in line?

And, aren't torn & taped books a no no?

Should I just contact the owner & explain nicely that she needs to remove the book from system.

Thanks for any replies.  Live help, doesn't seem to be too alive today.

Yes, if you decline, you will lose your place in line.

Put some requestor conditions on your account that say "no books with tape on them please". Make sure to turn them on, then accept this offer. She can then say that her book does not meet requestor conditions and you will retain your place at the front of the wish list.

However, the dilemma then falls to #2 on the wish list. I think you should go ahead and put the requestor conditions on your account, accept the offer, and then PM the sender and tell her she is not allowed to swap this book here. She should cancel instead of just declining your requestor conditions, and then she should not repost the book again.

It does no good at all to PM her before you accept the offer, because there is no way for her to remove a wish list book from the system once she's posted it. She has to wait for a request in order to cancel.

PM her and tell her that the book is not postable on PBS and she cannot keep posting it and PMing people to get them to take it. She needs to cancel so you do not lose your place in the WL line. She can go to the Book Bazaar and offer the book there for a credit as long as she explains the damage, but she cannot post it into the system.

If she does not cancel the book within a reasonable time, I would send her PMs to the site admin using the Contact Us link and have them deal with her directly.

I'm sure it's frustrating for you and I agree with Melanie.

If it's an unpostable WL book she should advertise it in Book Bazaar.

Yep, she is the one who needs to cancel so you don't lose your place in line. Explain to her that the book is not postable (provide linkage to the Help Docs if need be) and hope she was just ignorant of the fact that it was not postable, and that it's not just you being picky.

Use an RC, have her decline. This book has NO BUSINESS in the main PBS system.

Is this a new member?  I'd be tempted to report her for deliberately and persistantly posting an unpostable FIFO.

Can you read the book? what is the probelm, report her? LOL

I am a smoker, so i hope none of you picky people request my books, I have some good ones too.;

I absolutely LOVE TO READ, and as long as I can read the words, I really am not worried about little tears or a stain, books are for reading to me.

but thats me...

Just being able to read the book isn't the issue.  The issue is whether it falls under the guidelines of books that can be posted.

The book the OP is referring to is clearly unpostable under PBS guidelines and this member should be reported for repeatedly offering an unacceptable book.  It has nothing to do with being picky, it's about rules of the site.

I absolutely LOVE TO READ, and as long as I can read the words, I really am not worried about little tears or a stain, books are for reading to me.

And if this is acceptable to you, that's fine, but it is not acceptable for a book posted to the site.  If you should receive a book with tears and stains from someone at PBS and you choose to accept it without comment, then that's your prerogative, but the sending member has still broken the rules.

I smoke and eat chocolate ice cream while I am reading......caution......I do not like complaints and if you do not like the book and want credit , you must mail the book back.

Your signature line is a bit much.  First, smoking is not an issue here, unless you receive a request with conditions stating that they will not accept books from a smoking home.  I hope you will decline anyone with such an RC, because if you don't, you will be asked to refund the credit.  I don't think anyone cares what you eat while reading, but if said chocolate ice cream becomes a part of the book you are reading, then that book is unpostable under PBS guidelines, no exceptions.  You can offer it as an unpostable, but it cannot be posted into the system.  No one likes complaints, but if you post a clearly unpostable book into the system and a member marks it RWAP,  they are NOT required to return the book to you, unless you send them an extra credit to cover return postage.  I see that you have only been here since Oct. 2, so perhaps you need to read the rules of the site, because it seems that you may not understand the requirements here.

Here is where you can find the book posting conditions section of the rules   http://www.paperbackswap.com/help/help_item.php?id=205

Kelly if you send out an unpostable book and someone complains they do not have to send the book back unless you give them 2 credits-1 to reorder the book and 1 to cover postage to send it back.  So make sure you aren't getting chocolate icecream on those books.

PBS will close your account if you get a lot of complaints and refuse to refund credtis.

Also people don't see that blurb in your signature line when ordering a book.  Only a small fraction of PBS members use the forums.  Most order books through FIFO and have not control over whom the book is coming from.  Even if you put it on your bookshelf header they would probably not see it unless they looked at your bookshelf.  So putting in there that you smoke does not mean you can ignore a smoking RC.  And it would not get you out of a complaint it there's chocolate icecream on teh book.

I don't think it's being picky to want a book to meet the PBS posting guidelines.  There are other sites with no guidelines at all and people are free to choose which one they want to use.  If you choose PBS then you follow the guidelines. If you don't want to follow the rules of PBS then you join Bookmooch or one of the other sites with basically no rules (and of course no recourse if you get a too aweful to read book or no book at all).

Mary (MsRight) made some great points.

PBS will close your account if you get a lot of complaints and refuse to refund credtis.

There are posting guidelines that everyone must follow, it isn't negotiable.  Too many RWAP reported on a member and the account can be suspended or closed.  If you send out a book that does not meet PBS guidlelines or a members RC, they have a right to ask for their credit back.  If you choose not to send back the credit it will marked unresolved...too many unresolved transactions and your account is flagged for review.  Also if you choose not to communicate with a member that is another black mark against your account.  PBS does not get involved with swaps, but they expect all the members are adults and should communicate to resolve a dispute.

I don't think it's being picky to want a book to meet the PBS posting guidelines.

I agree with this statement.  One of the reasons I am a member, is that PBS has a level of quality control,  there is a process to follow and potential consequences if a member ignores the rules everyone else follows.
